Annual Cherokee Countywide Event
Fruit, Vegetable Show Winners’ Names Announced
Tht annual Charokaa County
Fruit and Vagatabk and Canning
Show was held last Thursday, June
11, at the Ruik High School. In ad-
dition to the Judging and awarding
of ribbons in six categories, several
informative programs were presen-
ted to the public during die day’*
program.
The Judged categories included,
freah vegetables, fruita, canned
produce, dried fruita and
vegetables, and two new
categories, desserts made from
vegetables and a Youth Division.
Thirty residents of Cherokee Coun-
ty entered their produce in the show
that began at noon and concluded at
7 p.m.
Judges that assisted during the
day were Cherokee County Hor-
ticulturist Joe Daniel, Dr. Dean
McCraw from Texas AAM Univer-
sity in College Station, and Crockett
Extension Agents, Willie May
Phillips and Anna Dickey. Also,
Belinda Covington, County Exten-
sion Agent from Nacogdoches.
Financial supporters of the show
included: Allied Texas Bank,
Citizens Bank, Continental State
Bank of Alto, First State Bank of
Wells, First National Bank, First
State Bank, and Rusk Federal
Savings and Loan.
The educational programs
presented during the day were:
Grafting, with Bruce Tunnell of
Rusk; Stir Frying Vegetables, by
Mazie Overby of Alto; a film en-
titled, Everything You Ever Wan-
ted to Know About Gardening, with
Joe Daniel; Convection Fry Pan
Cooking and Unusual Vegetables
for Cherokee County, both by Doris
DeSpain of Alto.

Dear Editor:
My heartfelt thanks and ap-
preciation to all of those people in
Alto and surrounding areas who
supported the Cherokee County
Fruit, Vegetable and Canning
Show. I will not mention all by
name since they will appear
elsewhere in the paper, but I do
want to give credit to the Alto Art
League for their fine presentation
of art work at the show.
The purpose of the show is to en-
courage both youth and adult gar-
dening as a means of carryhing on
the traditions of our forefathers by

and AM will hold its first meeting in
its new lodge hall July 3 at 7 p.m
according to Homer Gibson.
