Season is here for hurricanes
The National Weather Service is responsible for issuing warning of hur-
ricanes which approach the U. S. mainland. During the summer and 'fall, when
most hurricanes occur, forecast offices maintain a careful watch for development
of tropical storms and hurricanes.
As soon as there is a-definite indication that a hurricane is forming, even
though it is a thousand miles or more from the mainland, the storm is given a
name, and the Weather Service begins issuing advisories. The advisories are
issued frequently through the day and night and tell where the storm is, its in-
tensity and the speed and direction of movement.
If the hurricane moves toward the mainland, hurricane watch notices are
included in the advisories and gale and hurricane warnings are issued. In addition,
bulletins for news media are issued at frequent intervals to keep the ublic in-
formed of the storm's progress.
By using the Weather Service advisories and bulletins disseminated by
the news media, the location and movement of the hurricane can be plotted on
this chart.
Nobody knows when the first tropical storm of 1973 will begin to blow.
But it and others will be forming soon as the new hurricane season begins
June 1. It will last until Dec. 1.
Residents may want to keep this chart handy to plot the sometimes er-
ratic movements of naughty ladies of the tropics. The rings on the maps indicate
the mileage from Corpus Christi.
