Legislative
Report
mmiiiimmiimiiiiiiiiimiimiiii
Representative Tim Von
Dohlen has returned to Go-
liad after the end of the 63rd
Legislature. The Legisla-
ture considered nearly
3,000 bills of which ap-
proximately 800 were
passed and sent to the Gov-
ernor. Von Dohlen said, “I
want to take this opportunity
to thank the people of the
39th District for their let-
ters, phone calls, and re-
turned questionnaires which
assisted me in keeping a-
breast of the feelings of
my constituents. I am very
pleased with the work of
the 63rd Legislature not so
much in terms of what bills
or how many bills were
passed, but in the fact that
many major issues which
needed to be discussed open-
ly and thoroughly were de-
bated during the course of
the session. While a number
of serious problems were
resolved, I am confident that
the remaining critical is-
sues will receive thorough
study during the interim be-
tween sessions, and many of
these will be considered and
resolved during the next
legislative session.”
Von Dohlen took a very
active part during the leg-
islative session on many
issues and was particular-
ly involved in planning for
constitutional revision. Von
Dohlen said, “I feel that
the forthcoming Constitu-
tional Convention is most
important to the future of
Texas. I am dedicated to
informing the public on all
matters pertaining to re-
vision and having as much
participation from the citi-
zens as is possible. We are
far ahead in our prepara-
tion for the Convention than
other states which have held
constitutional conventions in
Recent years. I will be
spending much of my time
between now and the Conven-
tion continuing to prepare
for it. I look forward to the
opportunity of visiting with
the people throughout the
District on the matter of
constitutional revision dur-
ing the next few months.”
During the recent session
Von Dohlen passed thirteen
bills and resolutions. Von
Dohlen said, ‘‘The 63rd Ses-
sion was much better than
my first session in the Leg-
islature as we operated un-
der better rules, and more
importantly, in an atmos-
phere of openness and fair-
ness. This system of great-
er individual participation
by each member of the
Legislature must be con-
tinued and strengthened.”
Von Dohlen plans to travel
throughout the 39th Legis-
lative District, which is
comprised of DeWitt, Goliad,
Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca and
Refugio Counties, during the
course of the Summer. He
will be visiting and discuss-
ing past and future legisla-
tive matters.

Letter of Nomination
June 8, 1973
Dear Sirs:
I am writing this letter to share with you and reveal a sec-
ret of our family’s success, my father, David Martinez. Our
success is not dependent on money or material objects. Rath-
er, it is based on the intimate relationship of each of my
family members. While we are all partially independent,
there exists a dependence on each other which creates strong
family ties. My father is responsible for these feelings; he
has also been the one to set the example for the behavior of ,
each of my family members.
I am aware that each parent is special in his own way.
While my father has that particular special quality he also
possesses other traits which make him unique among other
men. For as long as I can remember he has always been there
when I needed him. When I was very young, I was exposed to
live in a realistic manner; it wasn’t a fairyland.' I am now
better able to cope with life and realize that there are some-
times more disappointments than moments of happiness. While
other parents offered like methods of rearing children, my
father was still always ahead.
Our environment was never strictly structured. There
were never demands placed on us. Because he didn’t have
the opportunity to graduate from high school, he didn’t demand
that we bring home excellent marks. Up until the present
time, my sisters and I voluntarily pushed a little harder to
please him. Because my twin brothers have not attended
school, I cannot say that we have all been fortunate to make
good marks.
He worked continuously to meet our demands as we grew
older. Although we were spoiled to some degree, he taught us
to appreciate everything he did for us. He worked during the
day, in the late afternoons, and many times on weekends. His
time for us was often limited, but it only made the time with
him more meaningful.
While he worked as an oil field maintenance man, he was
simultaneously talented as a carpenter; hence, he was able
to enlarge our house twice. For the last few years, he has
sacrificed his vacations to work for us. He has invested in
grain trucks which occupy a majority of his time in the sum-
mer. He has also taken an interest in farming and the raising
of some animals. Numerous times he has taken risks in his
investments, but his only motive has always been to better
his family conditions.
In 1969 he suffered a severe tragedy. Waiting several years
for a little boy, he was at last granted one. Unfortunately,
the baby that bore his hame died 4V2 mos. after birth. The
loss left an indelible mark upon him which he will carry for-
ever.
Although his mind was still in a chaotic state, he continued
to work even harder for his family. Now we have twins in our
family.
I am quite certain that they will be replicas of him. Pre-
sently they are wearing cowboy hats and riding tractors
eagerly attempting to identify with their father at an early age.
Sirs, I could continue forever and forever bragging about
my father. My family and I love him so much because he has
given us everything. He has made our lives stable, happy, and
secure. Without him our personalities would have never de-
veloped effectively.
In closing, I would like to thank you for your time in read-
ing my letter. I assure you that my father > has well enough
earned the title of ‘‘Father of the Year.”
Thank you,
Amelia Martinez
