Worth
By Nanalee Nichols
If you have ever
read this column, you
know I love animals.
Over the years I have
advocated to never,
ever dump and dog or
cat.
I am going to re-
peat myself. NEVER,
EVER dump a dog,
cat, kitten or puppy.
Period. End of story.
Take them to a shel-
ter if you have to, but
don’t dump them out
thinking they have a
“chance” . Yes, some-
times they do. Many
times, though, they
don’t.
Now, God has a defi-
nite sense of humor. If
that seems an abrupt
switch, let me explain.
Two weeks ago
we gave Parker, our
rowdy, hard to keep
in dog, to a country
home where there are
no cats and there are
young, energetic peo-
ple to control him.
We swore no more
big dogs. No need. We
have two dogs. That’s
enough. Blah, blah,
blah.
But last Tuesday a
lady came in the door
carrying a tiny black
puppy. Obviously
mostly Labrador, it’s
front leg was useless.
The shoulder joint was
badly swollen. It had
fleas, and ticks. It was
dehydrated.
The poor little
thing, no more than
five or six weeks old,
was found in a ditch
by the side of a remote
road.
The lady can’t have
big dogs because of
where she lives.
Can you see where
this is leading? Sure
you can.
She went to the
vet. Vaccinations, flea
treatment, worming,
and anti-inflamma-
tory medications fol-
lowed.
And, little Rosa is
home.
She is quite a dog.
Five lbs. of energy
now. Becoming house-
trained quickly, she is
driving the other two
“girls” in our house
crazy. “The boys”
(cats) have adjusted
although they don’t
appear impressed
with her run up , put
her paws down and
bark routine . They
haven’t slapped her
yet, but it is definitely
coming.
Little Rosa was very
lucky. She has wiggled
herself into our hearts
in record time.
For a Labrador pup
she is remarkably laid
back. She has a home.
But for every one
dumped that finds a
home there are many
more that die on the
roads, that are eaten
by coyotes, that starve
or die of dehydration.
No one wants to
think about animals
being killed at crowd-
ed shelters. But at
least there they do not
die a lingering death.
And often there is
a home waiting for
them, a home where
they will be cared for,
neutered instead of
having to have litter
after litter....and love.
Most of all. Love.
What all innocents
deserve, human or an-
imal.
