A FABLE
By Joachim Besen
Kendall County 4-H And
ETA Show Success
Termed by farm and ranch
people and townspeople alike
one of the best shows ever held
in Kendall County, the 1947 An-
nual 4-H and FFA Show was
held last Saturday at the Fair
Grounds. Weather _ conditions
were somewhat disagreeable,
but the crowds were large and
estimates were that not less
than 1,000 people were on hand
to view the good exhibits. The
Show started out with 36 en-
tries in the Fine Wool Fat Lamb
class being judged by Bill Oliver
of Kerrville. There were 5 Blue
Ribbons, 6 Red Ribbons, and 11
White Ribbons awarded in this
class. Mr. Oliver also placed the
mutton type fat lambs, of which
8 were shown: 2 Milk Fat Lambs
1 Cross-Bred Ram, and 3 Ewes
with lambs. In the Breeding
Sheep classes, there were 7 De-
laine ewe lambs; 5 Delaine ewes;
5 Delaine rams; 2 Rambouillet
ewes, and 4 mutton type ewes.
Paul Marquart of Block Creek
had the Champion of the Sheep
Division. There were 14 entries
in the Angora goat division, and
Elgin Marquart of Comfort had
the Champion Angora goat.
Mark Buckingham, Assistant
County Agent-Dairyman of San
Antonio, placed the dairy en-
tries, in which 5 entries were
exhibited.
The Fat Baby Beef Steers
were placed by Walton “Speedy”
Hicks of Bandera, and these
groups were, the ones which at-
tracted main attention. There
were 10 entries in the Milk Fed
Division, and 9 entries in the
Dry Lot Division. Elgin Mar-
quart of Comfort had Cham-
pion Steer on his 950 lb. calf,
and Marvel Lee Pfeiffer, Re-
serve Champion on his 820 lb.
Dry Lot Steer. Marvin Kohls
had first place Hereford bull,
and Gordon Leesch placed 1st
on his Hereford female. This
was an outstanding pair of
Hereford calves. In the swine
division, Mr. Terrell F. Gates of
Luther Burbank School of San
Antonio judged the entries. In
this division Harold Zoeller of
Boerne had the Champion on his
sow and litter of 10 pigs. This
was a beautiful exhibit and had
many admirers. There were 13
gilts exhibited; 1 sow and 5 fat
barrows.
A total of 42 birds were in
the pens of 3 chickens, and
Judge Hugo Vogt of San An-
tonio placed these. Seventeen
single capons were shown and
only 5 turkeys. Marvin Matter
of Waring, a Comfort FFA boy,
won Championship of thje Poul-
try Division with his good tur-
key tom.
In the auction of fat animals,
which was held in the afternoon,
Raymond Hicks of Bandera and
R. R. Tippit of Comfort served
as auctioneers. Local people did
an excellent job of bidding on
the animals, but no outside buy-
ers were present, and it was ne-
cessary to discontinue the sell-
ing of fat lambs. Most of these
will be held jover for the Kerr-
ville Show.
Champion Calf Brings
38c At Auction Here
The first animal to enter the
ring in the 4-H and FFA auction
last Saturday was the 950 lb.
Champion steer owned by Elgin
Marquart of Comfort, and was
bid in by Floyd H. Helm owner
of Adler’s, at 38c per lb. Fabra’s
Market purchased the Reserve
Champion, owned by Marvel
Lee Pfeiffer, an 820-lb. animal,
at 30c per lb. The 710-lb. calf
owned by Harold Zoeller was
purchased by Max Theis Gro-
cery for 28i/2c. This same firm
also purchased the 735-lb. calf
owned by Ralph Kneupper at
221/2C. The Boerne Locker Plant
purchased 4 calves, one 865-lb.
calf owned by Harriet Grosser
at 25c per lb.; one 750-lb. calf
owned by Gordon Norris at 22c,
another 700-lb. calf owned by
Gordon Norris at 22i/^c, and a
470-lb. Brahma calf owned by
Francis Faltin at 2OV2C. Robert
Wiedenfeld of Comfort purchas-
ed the 790-lb. calf of Donald
Linnartz for 22c. E. K. Ehman
of Boerne purchased the 805-lb,
calf owned by Jeffrey Seiden-
sticker at 24c per lb., and Ar-
thur Esser of Kendalia purchas-
ed the 610-lb. calf from Francis
Faltin at 30c, and another from
Ralph Kneupper, weighing 735
lbs. at 26c per lb.
In the Fat Lamb Division, the
Boerne State Bank and Fred
Thallman, Manager of the Ban-
dera Wool and Mohair Ware-
house each paid the top of 42c
for fat lambs. The Boerne State
Bank donated their purchase to
the 4-H Clubs and FFA Chap-
ters, as did Mr. Thallman with
the 3 lambs he purchased. C. T.
Roberts, of Roberts Drug Store
in Boerne, also purchased a lamb
which he donated to the boys.
The interest of these business
firms is greatly appreciated by
the youngsters. Other buyers of
fat lambs were Chester Faltin
of Comfort, Boerne Lions Club,
A. McD. Gilliat and Junior
D’Spain.
Purchasers of swine were
Clarence M. Holekamp, Sheriff
Eid Edge, and the Luther Bur-
bank School of San Antonio,
which was represented by Ter-
rell F. Gates, the Principal, who
had earlier judged the swine ex-
hibits.
Local support of the show was
excellent, but representatives of
San Antonio Commission firms
failed to show up, which caused
considerable consternation to
sponsors of the sale. To all bus-
iness firms and individuals who
contributed so liberally to the
success of both the Show and
Sale, the committee members
wish to express their sincere ap-
preciation.
Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Toepper-
wein and Miss Verda Mae Toep-
perwein were shopping in San
Antonio, Saturday.
Mrs. Ben Gresham and child-
ren returned from Lubbock the
past week and will again reside
in Boerne. Mr. Gresham will be
tied up in Lubbock a few weeks
longer with a business project.
The wild animals and beasts
of the jungle held a meeting to
discuss the matter of regaining
independence in their jungle
land. They did not invite the
domesticated^ animals because
they considered them slaves to
the human race. After some
lengthy discussion they decid-
ed to complain to the U. N.
and ask the U. N. to give
them back their jungle land, so
they could rule themselves
without interference from the
human race, but one in the
crowd stood up and said, “It
is no use, how can be expect
those human beings to listen to
us when they fight among
themselves?” To this they all
agreed, and the meeting ended.
