SAFETY AND BEAUTY
FOR OUR HIGHWAYS
Three specific goals might be
set for local participation in the
Highway Beautification and
Memorial Plantink Program now
under consideration in Kendall
County.
First, our roads and streets
should be SO Safe that accidents
are virtually impossible. Increas-
ed safety can be accomplished by
clearing sharp bends, turns, and
intersections of excess bushes,
unnecessary obstructions and by
keeping hedges trimmed down
to four feet in height and trim-
ming branches from trees less
than eight feet off the ground.
Our second goal might be to
create a sense of orderly spa-
ciousness, in our vistas, that
speaks of a symetrical beauty
in general.
Third, we all certainly want
our community to have that
special, or different, look, that
will set it apart in the mind of
the casual traveler as the com-
munity that had something dis-
tinctive to recall it to memory.
Boerne is to be one hundred
years old very soon. When the
day comes to mark a century of
growth for our town, we all, in
this vicinity want to be able to
point with pride to the entire
community here on those three
fore-going points.
Let us have all individuals
and organizations link hands to
help the committee already as-
signed to this problem in Ken-
dall County accomplish their
worthy project.
Besides cleaning up thorough
ly, it would help much to beau-
tify our community if everyone
gave away all roots and bulbs of
flowering plants and cuttings
from shrubs to fellow citizens,
privately first and the remain-
der through some public setup
for that purpose.
This is the second in a series
of articles written by the report
er of the Boerne Grange in co-
operation with the Chairman of
the Highway Memorial Planting
Program in Kendall County.
VISITS LEGION HOSPITAL
Mrs. Mabel Dunn visited Le-
gion Hospital Tuesday in the in-
terest of the Camp and Hospital
Council. While she was there the
Kendall County Chapter was
called on to donate a large world
map, a large dictionary, 1944 or
later, used banjos, mandolins or
guitars.
Easter flowers will aggain be
sent to the hospitals, they may
be left at the Boerne Motor Co.
not later than April 5th.
Mrs. Dunn reminds us the pa-
tients still enjoy the cookies
sent each month. So lets remem
ber them.
ADVANTAGES OF
CONSOLIDATION
OF SCHOOLS
Of the numerous advantages
to be derived from the consoli-
dations of schools, economy is
one of the outstanding consider
ations for in no other way can
so many benefits be obtained at
such low costs. In consideration
it is the small school that h.-is
the leas', to lose and the most to
gain. By increasing the teacher
load, si eh improvements as bet-
ter equipment, better trained
teachers and a wider curriculum
will result without need for ad-
ditional expenditures. Actually
the provision, operation and
maintenance of several small, in-
adequately equipped schools is
more costly to a county than the
provisions operations, and main-

constipated. This man is one of
the hundreds in this vicinity

bowels are regular for the first

funds for increasing the num-
ber of teachers, and consequent-
ly the number of subjects
taught. Longer class jeriods will
result for the teacher load will
be shifted from decreased per-
iods to increased enrollment per
teacher. Supervised study will
also result.
If economy were the only ar-
gument in support of such a
pian we see enough reason to
endorse it but there are other
and even more important argu-
ment?.
It is the aim of Education lo
produce well intergrated indi-
viduals who will fit into our
democratic society and carry
forward our democratic ideals.
In order to produce such well
rounded citizens a rich and va-
ried program must be provided
that will develop the individual
physicall, mentally, morally and
socially. Such a widely diversi-
fied program is impossible ex-
cept where forces combine to
provide the necessary facilities.
These needs will be adequatey
met when we establish the
means for them through consol-
idation.
The mingling of the rural
children with the city children
has an important social aspect.
It will bring about adjustments
which will benefit both groups
to unite
