THE WEATHER
March has given us a variety
of spring weather, the most re-
cent was a howling dust storm
which hit here Saturday after-
noon. This was the first duster
in this area for over a year.
Earlier this month we had
some rainfall, not enough how-
ever.
Freezing temperatures, snow,
sleet, thunderstorms, and on
several days the thermometer
climbed to 80 degrees.
In the Panhandle district, vis-
ibility was cut almost to zero,
due to dust. At Mineola, a twist-
er died much damage, but no
lives were lost.
March this year, has definite-
ly run the gamut weatherwise.

Cuts Cedar—Plans Cross Fence
R. J. “Buddy” Rose has cut
all cedar on his ranch northeast
of Comfort. Rose plans to cross-
fence another pasture soon. The
fence will enable him to better
utilize his grasses and will make
the handling of livestock much
easier.

Benefits of Organic Matter
David Granberg, who ranch-
es north of Kendalia, has had a
soil test made on some of his
fields. Small grain which was
seeded on the fields of high or-
ganic matter content suffered
much less from the recent hard
freeze than did those on fields
where the organic matter was
low.
Granberg is convinced that
the use of crop residues in re-
placing organic matter in the
soil is of primary importance to
good survival and production
under adverse weather condi-
dall Coil Conservation District.
He also used the financial help
of the A. S. C. to help built the
fences and pipeline.
*****
About 70 percent of soil ero-
sion occurs in April and May.
Good range cover will prevent
the loss of valuable soil and help
to store moisture for the dry
months in the summer.

tions as well as normal con-
ditions.

Completes Part of Plan
Lewis Kayton, located north
of Boerne, has built one new
cross fence and will build anoth-
er as soon as fence builder can
build it. This will help him use
more complete deferments to in-
sure a more desirable cover of
grasses. He has also put in a
new pipeline to furnish water to
three pastures. This will save
putting in a new well or having
ivestock to travel great dis-
tances for water. These prac-
tices are all part of Kayton’s
conservation plan with the Ken-
