Cooper Review - Page 3A
Charleston & Lake Creek News
By Vicki Vasco
We are still having lovely
weather in the East End. We got
a little rain Sunday morning. We
got lots of nice rain last week.
Cleveland got some dreaded
hail Monday, a week ago.
The Cooper Masons are
having a special meeting
Friday, May 16, at 5 p.m., in
the City Chamber building. It is
a come and go meeting. Casual
dress. Everyone is invited.
Dolores Jackson visited her
cousin Margaret Ann Scott
Hoot in Canton Monday.
Margaret’s husband is a dentist,
Dolores visited him too.
The Delta County Historical
Commission met Monday
evening, April 21, at the Silver
Skillet in Cooper. Mr. Dave
Oyler gave the invocation. Mrs.
Zelda Fisher was the speaker.
She talked about the history
of the Delta County Schools.
There was a school in just about
every community at one time.
The tables were decorated with
an Easter theme. One table
was decorated with a quilt that
Zelda’s niece had pieced and
quilted for Zelda that was made
of “Dick and Jane” squares.
Eighteen attended that meeting.
Donna King read the minutes,
and Sylvia Wood gave the
treasurer’s report. Dr. Torrance
Vandy griff led the pledge to the
American Flag, and Dolores
Jackson led the pledge to the
Texas Flag. Dolores sang
“Texas, Our Texas.” It was a
very informative meeting.
The Town and Country
Garden Club had an
arrangement showing Tuesday,
April 24, in the Cooper First
United Methodist Church.
Those flower arrangements
that the ladies had fixed were
lovely. Lots of people attended
that flower show.
Talking about beautiful
flowers, the bluebonnets are
beautiful in the East End this
year. There are even some white
ones on the Bradford Hill west
to Charleston. You don’t see
white ones often. The white iris,
red Indian Paint Brushes, and
blue bonnets on the Aldridge
comer east of Charleston have
been especially beautiful this
year, The blue bonnets in front
of the county bam and the ones
on the Ruth Beckham Scott hill
are beautiful. The red clover
is just beginning to show up.
It is beautiful too. All the rain
that we have been getting in the
East End has been helping the
wild flowers.
The East Delta Baptist Church
had a lock-in Friday evening for
the young folk.
Tommy Shane, Madeline,
Jacob and Scotty Ingram spent
the weekend in Charleston,
and made it to Church Sunday
morning.
Don’s Uncle W. P. “Dub”
Hood of liberty called Monday.
We had a nice long talk with
him. He is doing well.
Juanita Snyder called from
Indiana one day last week to tell
me about Sonny Mills death.
She is doing well.
The Paris Noon Study Club
met Wednesday, April 24, at
Paris Jr. College. Shirley Smith
had the meditation, and she led
the pledges to the flags. Marva
Sansing, a Master Gardener,
was our guest speaker. She
talked about a man gathering
bulbs from old home places. It
was a very interesting talk.
Journi Cate Ingram had a 9^
birthday Tuesday, April 22, and
she was taking the STAAR test
that same day. Her mother took
her, Jacie, Clay, and Ryan out to
eat that evening at Chili’s. They
had a party for her Saturday, and
some of her little girl friends
spent Friday night with her.
Journi is taking guitar lessons
in Paris. She had a guitar recital
Saturday before her birthday
party.
Have you heard about people
just picking up fish off the
ground instead of fishing with a
pole and a line? It rained so hard
and fast Monday in the East End
that the Ingrams were picking
up fish off the ground. Morgan
Baker’s pool ran over, and fish
were going everywhere. They
had to be careful of the snakes
because they were all over the
place too.
The Daughters of the Republic
of Texas, the George Washington
Stell Chapter met Saturday,
April 26, at the Paris Golf and
Country Club with 9 women
present. Patsy Davis, a retired
Texas History Teacher had the
program. She talked about the
History of Texas. It was a very
good program. The Captain
Charles Croxall Chapter
National Society Daughters of
the American Revolution met
Saturday afternoon in Fairlee
at the home of Carolyn Burk.
Shirley Smith introduced the
prospective member Tammy
Stegall of Commerce, wife
of Scott Stegall. She talked
about her family history of
the Pace family. We discussed
the scholarship that we will
be awarding one Commerce
High School senior, who is
planning to attend Texas A &
M-Commerce. We discussed
our Memorial Day services,
which will be held at the First
Baptist Church in Commerce,
Monday, May 26 at 6 p.m.
Wyman Williams will be the
speaker. The Hunt County
Honor Guard will perform.
The Boy Scout Troop 323 will
help. Rob McQuarter will play
taps. It should be a very good
program. Everyone is invited
to attend.
Grover Nabors is in therapy
in the Legend Healthcare, 520
SE 8^ St. Room 507. Paris,
Texas 75460. He would love to
get a card from you.
Dawson Hamner was baptized
at the Covenant Christian
Church in Paris Sunday
morning. His grandmother
Katie Malone and his aunt Lyn
Phillips attended those services.
At the Methodist Sunday
morning, Whitley Speight was
the Worship Leader, and Lyn
Phillips was the Lay Leader.
Paula Kizer was the Children’s
Leader. Jacie Phillips and Jerry
Brandenburgh sang “On Eagles
Wings.” Billy Watson lit the
candles, and we had several
ushers. Gary was ill and not
able to be at Church, so Chris
Kizer brought the message. He
did a good job. Helen Anderson
played the old Aldridge piano,
and Annell Patterson led the
singing, which was beautiful.
Remember these in your
prayers: Juanita Snyder, Grover
Nabors, Verlee Morgan, Lenora
Long, Gwen Pickering Wood,
Peggy Watson, and Chubby
Martin.
Our condolences are for the
family and friends of The Rev
Glen Vickers of Paris. The
Rev. Vickers passed away
Wednesday, April 23. He held
several revivals at the Methodist
Church in Charleston and took
our pastors’ places when they
were not able to be in Church.
Have a good week!

Us, widow women, can
survive in the wild! Just give
us two credit cards, our cell
phone, a cup of coffee, a tube of
Ben-Gay, and a can of W-D 40,
and we can survive. Oh, there
are times when we need help
from the Seed House Gang,
such as: when a wheel rolls off
our lawn mower for no reason
at all, when our well caves in,
when our weed eater needs
fixing, when we need a skunk
trapped, and the list goes on.
Thanks to all the guys at the
seed house for helping us out.
Please don’t croak!
Don’t forget the City Election
on May 1O^1. The following
four people are running for the
three positions as Alderman:
Sharline Freeman, Dewey
Marsh, Jack Kiley and Ed
Pickard.
Lois Amundson and Bob
Cadenhead enjoyed a luncheon
provided by Texas A&M
University in Commerce for
retired faculty and staff on
Sunday.
Klondike News
By John & Elizabeth Hopkins
A lot of “Thank You’s” to
everyone who helped with the
fish fry last Saturday. There
were lots of workers who made
sure everyone had lots to eat,
volunteers who stocked the
dessert and auction tables and
all those who came to enjoy
the food and fun. Jerry Currin
didn’t have a dollar amount
but he thought the fundraiser
was a big success. Janet and
Jerry Currin got a really big
surprise at the fish fry. Jerry
looked up once and said “That
little girl looks like our Addie”
(from Louisiana) and before
he got it out of his mouth, she
was followed by her sister
Tinley carrying Caden! Behind
them were Jordan, Rodney
and Heather, Chris, and Jason
and Jennifer! It was a double
surprise because Jordan and
Rodney had been here Saturday
morning for a haircut. Jerry’s
sister from Garland also joined
the group. The only thing
wrong was there was too little
time to visit because of the
success of the fish fry. But
Jerry’s sister did stay the night
so they did get to visit with
her.
Wanda Helms said her
family has been busy this
week, especially Kendra. On
Saturday she competed in
the Regional Track Meet in
Bullard and then had to hurry
home to get ready for the prom
Saturday night. (Hope she had
time to shower!!) Then after
lunch on Sunday she was back
at the school de-decorating the
gym for classes on Monday.
Misty and Larry George
had his children this weekend.
Larry treated all of them to
the Fish Fry. Larry also said
Tanner is living with them
now. Misty was busy patching
some torn jeans. (Sounds like
a never-ending job to me.)
Patricia Blundell heard from
her daughter Rebecca a couple
oftimesthisweek. ThenPatricia
and Jene went “traveling”
to a relative’s country home
to have their pictures made
with the bluebonnets. There
was an old bathtub sitting in
the bluebonnets and Patricia
chose that as the setting for
her photograph. On Saturday,
Patricia and Jene went to Paris
for a while.
On Saturday, I joined many,
many well-wishers at the
wedding of Maggie Thomas
and Gerald Thurman. The
Klondike group included
Thomas and Paulette Irvin,
Bob and Diane Lewis,
Wanda Johnson, Toni Ramos,
Dorothy Hooten, Sherrie
Phelps and son Ben, Jack and
Ethyl Neathery, Jerry and
Faye Robnett and James and
Vickie Williams. (If I have
left anyone out, please excuse
an old woman’s memory.) The
church and fellowship hall had
been beautifully decorated by
friends and family. Maggie
wore a two-piece gown of
antique lace and accented the
effect with a sheer shawl and
pearls. She carried a bouquet
of spring flowers and was
attended by her sister and
Gerald’s daughter. Gerald
wore the standard suit and tie
and the most amazing smile
on his face. He was attended
by his son and grandson. The
ceremony had several officiants
and the wedding vows were
administered by Maggie’s
niece who is a Justice of the
Peace in the Dallas area. Other
members of the wedding party
included Randy Harrison,
Tim and Emily Thomas and
their children Harrison, Violet,
and “Little Maggie”, Brandy
Thomas Allen and Michelle
Henderson. Gerald and Maggie
will live in Cooper.
