How Much Rain is One Inch?
How much rain does it take
for you to get 1 inch of water
into the ground? Recently fol-
lowing 31/2 inch rain at Waring,
Mr. Gordon D. Mills and a Soil
Conservation Service technician
checked moisture penetration un
der several conditions. The
ground was wet only three in-
ches under very short buffalo-
grass and 15 inches under prop-
erly used buffalograss. This
meant that the short buffalo
area absorbed only 3/4 inch of
rain and lost about 2 3/4 inches
while the properly used buffalo
absorbed practically all the rain
that fell. Checks on all short
grass areas showed high loss of
water. Areas of little bluestem
and sideoats grama were still
better than the area of proper-
ly used buffalo.

Water Distribution
A. C. Zoeller, west of Sister-
dale, has completed two stock-
water ponds. These ponds are in
different pastures providing wat
er in locations previously with-
out adequate water since cross-
fences have been constructed.
The new water supplies provide
better grazing distribution. A
well distributed water supply is
almost priceless for livestock
management.
Crossfencing a pasture is a
feans of securing better range-
land management. One or anoth-
er pasture then can be deferred1.
Grasses then can make some
growth, develop a better root
system to utilize moisture from
greater dept and also produce
seed crops. Seed is the main
source of grass propagation.
