Charles Laughton’s Bible-read-
ing' tour has proved so success-
ful—-bringing him in about $100,-
000 in twq months—that he plans
to make it an annual affair. Next
year, he will go to New York,
Chicago, and a number of other
large cities.

Joan Evans, Sam Golclwyn’s
newest treasure, has made quite
a start on her first year in movies.
She traveled 60,000 miles for per-
sonal appearances, appeared on'
five radio shows and four maga-
zine covers; was the subject of
25 magazine articles and receives
300 fan letters weekly. Her first
film, you will probably remem-
ber. was with Farley Granger in
“Roseanna. McCoy.” Currently,
She is appearing in “Edge of Do-
om.” With all this, Joan is only
fifteen. •

When ,George Stevens posted
his call sheet for “A Place in the
Sun,” he requested 20 girls, but
specified “not too pretty.” The
girls were to play factory toilers,
with neither the time nor the
money to glamorize themselves.
Elizabeth Taylor, the star, will be
lovely enough to make up for
all the rest of them.
Well, Barry Fitzgerald has re-
turned to Hollywood after a long
tour of Europe. He denied the
rumors that he is going to retire
and live in Eire with his sister.
He has no immediate plans for
a film, however.
❖ *
For the second time, Clark Ga-
ble has a picture in which no
women appear. His “Across the
Wide Missouri” is completely
without female adornment ex-
cept for a Navajo Indian squaw.
However, his next, “To Please a
Lady,” will have Barbara Stan-
wyk.

Hollywood’s loss is Broadway’s
gain: Martha Scott will star on
Broadway in “Inherit the Moon.”
* ❖ *
Joan Leslie, who made her
comeback to the screen in still un-
released film, “Bed of Roses,”
with Joan Fontaine, will co-star
with Robert Walker in “The Skip-
per Surprised His Wife.”
❖ ❖ ❖
Hal Wallis has signed Blanche
Yurka, veteran stage star, who
has recently confined her acti-
vities to television in New York,
i i -r—n—too-'''his super west-
ern, “The Furies.’j When this is
finished Miss Yurka plans to re-
turn to Broadway in “Caesar and
Cleopatra,” opening late in Dec-
ember with Sir Cedric Iiardwicke
and Dili Palmer.

Coleen Gray, who sang with
the girls’ choir while attending
Hamline University in St. Paul,
will sing for the first time on the
screen in Frank Capra’s ‘'Riding
High.” She joins Bing Crosby ir
three numbers.
