Khan home to be featured on HUM Tour
By Mary L. Kirby
A visit to Camille Valenti Khan’s home at 1107 Mitchell St.
is to take a tour through her 23 years as a Navy wife when
she traveled the world and visited every continent except
Antarctica. While her children have launched their own lives,
Camille has settled in landlocked Gilmer in part to be near
her mother who lives three blocks away.
The home will be part of the Historic Upshur Museum’s
3rd Annual Heritage Home tour on Sunday, May 15, from 2-4
p.m. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the museum
or at the door of any of the three locations: Tom and Pam
Edge at Trader Tom’s and the Antique Store at 113 Trinity
St.; Tim and Carolyn Marshall’s at 400 W. Scott St. or Mrs.
Valenti Khan’s.
The museum is also raffling a $25 gift card to the River Bend
Restaurant on Caddo Lake or a one-night stay at The Magnolia
House in Paris, a bed-and-breakfast for $1 a chance.
At Mrs. Valenti Khan’s, the living room of the house built by
Janet and Temple Ingram in 1949 is now filled with memories
of her years as a Navy spouse. One steps into a room with oak
flooring and crown molding typical of the era.
To the right of the front door hangs a tapestry bought in
Turkey, the rug on the floor came from a market in Pakistan,
and on the bookshelves are items from Spain and Italy, two
of her favorite postings.
By the tapestry is a curved-front cabinet with some of
Camille’s many collectibles from her travels including some
Wedgewood pieces and an alabaster reproduction of Venus
de Milo which she bought in Greece. Family pictures adorn
the drop-leaf table.
Facing the front door is an antique cabinet and in front of

Gladewater man dies when his pickup hits tree
By Phillip Williams
A 47-year-old Gladewater
man was killed in a one-
vehicle accident on U.S. 271
between Gilmer and Glade-
water on Friday, said Upshur
County Pet. 1 Justice of the
Peace Wyone Manes.
Manes said she pronounced
Jason L. Hall dead at the scene
in the rural West Mountain
community south of Gilmer
after his pickup ran into a
wooded area and struck a
tree. The site is just north of
the intersection with Camp
Road.
The Texas Department of
Public Safety said the accident
is believed to have occurred
at 7:40 a.m., but that it appar-
ently went undiscovered for
several hours. Investigating
DPS Trooper Brandon Love
arrived at the scene at 3:26
p.m., Manes said.
The victim’s sister-in-law,
Cindy Hall, said Monday the
vehicle was located by us-
ing an app on his wife’s cell
phone. Jason Hall’s wife had
tried to call him and the calls
had kept going to voice mail,
Cindy Hall said.
She also said Jason Hall had
told her he was diabetic.
Hall, a night worker at
Walmartin Gilmer, had gotten
off work at 7:30 a.m. and “I
guess he went to sleep on the
way home,” Manes said. His
southbound 2000 Ford F-150
pickup ran off the left side of
the roadway before entering
the woods, she said.
