us from thousands of years of his-
tory. As a result we still look up-
on mental problems with shame
and fear. This fear is due to our
lack of knowledge or ignorance
concerning mental health. Mr.
Cummings further stated that only
t*% of . hospital beds throughput
ottt the U. S. are filled each day,
while 90% of our mental hospital
beds are filled each day. Also one
out of eyery three children in high
school today will be treated for
mental disturbances sometime in
the future. With these alarming
figures in mind he went on to add
that in all the U. 8. there are only
4800 psychiatrists at ths present

Sometimes I wonder what for-
tunate fate decreed that February
should have three National holi-
days. Really, I gueaa only two
of them are holidays, and they
are Washington’s birthday ■ and
Lincoln’s birthday. But Valentine
Day, which is tomorrow, Thurs-
day, February 14, comes in for a
great deal of celebration and to-
day Valentines by the millions
flood Unde Sam’s post -office
yearly. Durbig one aeaaon, a post
office in one, of our larger cities,
accepted 1,260,000 Valent: nes and
another over 750,000,
Today's Valentines have- re-
turned to the sentimental themes
of the traditional- Valentine greet-
ing, with a modern touch added.
The symbols which "for centuries
have been associated with love—
the ffd rote And forgtt-nn~not>»
the lace and *m blazoned hearts
—are there in delicate tracery on
the over, just as they were on
Valentines of s hundred years
ago. But today’s Valentkie senti-
ments are expressed in a warm,
human atyle that is .eloquent in its
simplicity and sincerity. ..
The growing popularity of
friendship and family cards, more
apparant this year than at any
me in the past, is an indication
that Valentine Day has come to
mean more to I people than ever
before. Maybe its because the try-
ing experiences of the war has
given all of us a new and deeper
appreciation ef love and friend-
ship.
