• THE GRAHAM LEADER, THURSDAY, AUGUST $, 1953
News From
The Congress
wheal end held It together Repub-
licans and Democrats alike will
miss Senator Taft on Capitol Hill,
and his place will be almost Im-
possible to fill.
It seems Ironical in a way that
in the last day or two of this ses-
sion. the Congress should be asked
to consider raising the national
debt limit to 280 billion dollars,
and on the same day be asked to
approve legislation which will
make available 14 billion dollars,
plus, for the foreign aid program.
The national debt now stands
roughly at 272 billion dollars,
which is greater than the national
debts of all the other countries in
the world combined. Prorating
this national debt in the same
proportion as Texas paid Internal
revenue into the Federal Treasury
last year, Texas’ share of this na-
tional debt is nine billion .seventy-
five million dollars. Frotn the in-
formation given us by the Treas-
ury Department and Senator Har-
ry Byrd who knows as much as
anyone in Congress about our fis-
cal affairs, we could have operated
the Government the rest of this
year and not exceeded the present
limit of the debt and could have
maintained a cushion of about
three billion 200 million dollars.
Therefore, I felt that the limit
should not be raised because of
these facts thst show we could
safey operate the government
without the raise and, secondly, if
raised, it would certainly be an
invitation for additional borrow-
ing which would further jeopar-
dize our credit and dilute the
value of our money.
Above everything else, we must
maintain the good health of the
economy of this country. This is
probably the most important ques-
tion facing all of us today, for if
our economy fails, then every oth-
er problem that we discuss be-
comes relatively unimportant.
I expect to be in the District
just as son as possible, and be-
tween now and the first of next
year I expect to be in every town,
community and county in the dis-
trict'. My office is in Room 206 of
the Post Office Building in Wich-
ita Falls and will be open every

son of Mr and Mrs. Douglas Mar-

Arvle Marshall.
When Tommy died in April of
this year his companions in the

for the first time, for Tommy’s
friends were about his age. almost

honor of Tommy
The result is a refurnished and
redecorated junior department
which will benefit other boys and
girls for years to come. The funds
for the project began with the
contents of Tommy’s little bank,
less than ten dollars. The efforts
and enthusiasm of the boys and
girls brought quick co-operation
from their parents, Tommy’s fam-
ily and many others.
