SNAKES IN YOUR BOOTS . . .
Of course everyone has heard of
1 “snakes in your boots,” and this
] certainly applies to the Rev. E. R.
Gordon, pastor of the Graham
First Methodist Church, whp re-
lated an incident that happened
to him early Saturday morning.
Rev. Mr. Gordon stated that he
went to his church office and
while sitting at his desk looking
over the morning mail and at-
tending to routine business, sud-
denly heard a clattering and rat-
tling noise in the wastebasket
which sounded exactly like a rat-
tlesnake. This Methodist preacher
wasted no time in getting out of
his office, and in the rush fell
/gainst the desk, but finally man-
aged to get out of his study. Arm-
ed with a broom handle, he re-
turned to his office to kill the
snake. To his surprise Rev. Mr
Gordon discovered a number of
“funny looking” litlte birds (the
type that build nests in chimneys)
had dropped .through the chimney
into the fireplace, and taken ref-
uge in the waste basket. Several
were clinging to the telephone
cord.
Well, the pastor sighed and
said, "What a scare.” About that
time, Mrs. O. E. (Cassy) Duey,
church secretary, walked in, start-
ling Mr. Gordon again, and asked,
“What in the world has hap-
pened?”; as he was still shaking
and it was several minutes before
he could relate what had hap-
pened.
That night we asked Rev. Gor-
don and wife, Jane, over to our
house for some fresh peach home-
made cream, and he was still
shaking. We noticed he ridn t re-
move his coat, and later other
friends dropped by for refresh-
ments .and they asked why'he was
so shaky, and he remarked, “ice
cream always makes me shake "
BEST SALESMAN .
Retailers "can't gel along" with-
out newspaper advertising “and
they’d better not try." Those words
didn’t emminate from an advertis-
ing solicitor, but from a retailer,
J. C. Penney, chairman of the
board of the company that bears
his name, and a man who knows
how to sell merchandise.
“We can’t do biAiness without
newspaper advertising,” said Mr.
Penny. “The newspapers are our
market place where we come to
cry our wares.”
In thousands of communities the
local newspapers reach millions of
readers regularly with a visual
record of news and advertising
that is not matched by any other
means of communication.
Is it possible that our summer-
time Is so nearly gone with today
the flth of August? Vacation will
soon be over for most people—at
least by the end of this month and
if there are young people in the
house, they are becoming school
conscious again. Lest you mothers
forget, schdol wardrobes take some
consideration and have you gotten
around to those pre-school optom-
etrist and dental appointments!...
