The announcement that there would
be a meeting Monday night of the
American Legion failed to get a res-
ponse from enough to "constitute a
quorum, and therefore no business
was transacted. It is planned to
hold a meeting later and another ef-
fort will b§ made to get some enthu-
siasm into the organization.

also reported that there war no oppo-
sition to the movement, but it was
suggested that th:s matter should
come out of the city taxes, then the
property owners would be contribut-
ing to the support of the ruglitwatch-
inan, whereas now it is the tenant
who is protecting the property. It
was stated that this plan had been
adopted only for the present .until the
city gets in a financial condition to
pay this amount and this was an emer-
gency to save the 5 percent insurance
rate. It is well known that the city
is now paying the old school bond and
the old waterworks debt, and when
these two debts are liquidated, the
city will be on a splendid financial
basis, especially since the expense of
the city government has been cur-
tailed by combining the two offices
into one, the.secretary, assessor and
collector.
The nipping cold weather must have
had something to do with the splendid
enthusiasm which prevailed, and there
was a vein of humor through all the
proceedings which brought hearty
laughter from everyone. Somebody
remarked that the street-light' pro-
ject was the best piece of work the
Chamber of Commerce had put across
in a long time, whereupon J. R. Key’s
absence was noted, and it was decided
to appoint a - committee to see the gen-
tleman and ascertain the reason why
ho put a string of nice lights along
bis business block and then lay down
on the job and even failed to come
to the meeting of the Chamber of
Commerce. J. II. Andrew and V. E.
Curry were appointed oh the com-
mittee, and when they called on the
chairman of the street-light commit-
tee, Mr. Key, he stated that he put the
lights around his place of business to
keep the other fellows in the dark
until after Christmas holidays (?)

Dr. Josephine Gaffney appeared as
representative of the Home and
School Club and asked that the Cham- ;
ber of Commerce endorse the Comma- ;
nity Christmas tree which is being |
sponsored by the Home and School
Club. A motion was made and e‘ar- ‘
ried that the Chamber of Commerce j
endorse the movement and assist in
a financial way within reasonable
bounds.
There were two of the new mem- j
bers present, W. H. Hinton and T. V. J
Westlund, and these gentlemen were :
called upon for speeches by the chair.
Mr. Hinton said he had not prepared j
a speech for the meeting, but he want- j
ed to say that he was liking Lampasas j
and the people fine, and when the j
Chamber of Commerce wanted to do
anything just call on him, even to j
taking shovel and pick and working ;

any ability to making a speech but j
said he was glad to meet with the j
Chamber of Commerce, and assured j
them he was ready and willing to do .

way. Barker Briggs, of Kempner, is j
