At The Methodist Church-
Rev. W. T. Renfro occupied
the pulpit at the Methodist church
Sunday morning and spoke on
the text, Psalm XVIII 2: “The
Lord is my rock and my fortress,
and my deliverer; my God, my
strength, in whom I will trust;
my buckler, and the horn of my
salvation and my high tower.”
He said in part:
“Luther once said ‘Thank God
for the personal pronouns in
Scripture,’ but we can go further
and say, ‘Thank.God for the per-
sonal possessive pronoun.’ It is
used here no less than eight times
in one sentence. It is a rare in-
ventory of spiritual truth land
grace. In the last analysis, the
only religion is a personal relig-
ion, the effects of which you may
feel in your life.
“There are three ways injwhich
things may be apprehended: in-
tellectually, emotionally^and vi-
tally. You may be convinced by
science that all men are created
with equal rights and privileges,
your intellect may grasp this as
a fact; you may stand in the
shadow of Independence Hall in
Philadelphia and; hear the bell
ring which sounded on the Jocca-
sion of the manifesto declaring
that all men are created with
equal rights and privileges, and
your emotions may be stirred by
the memory; but not until it is
proven in yourjactual experience
do you vitally and practically ap-
prehend the great truth.
“We are saved by faith. ‘The
just shall live byj-faith.’ ‘He that
liveth and believeth on |the Son
hath everlasting life.’
“What man is there who does
not give1 intellectual assent to the
fact of Christ’s birth and life.
You may stand by the manger of
Bethlehem, you may hear the ev-
erlasting voice of Scripture, you
may see the great multitudes and
listen to their hosannas, you may
look upon those who fhave
marched under His banner, you
may give intellectual assent to
the truth, you may exclaim,
‘Jesus Christ, the only begotten
of the Father, who died on the
cross to save the world,’ but you
are not saved by this.
“Yo$ may stand under Gol-
gotha’s brow, and hear the sol-
diers nail the Lord to the cross,
you may see the physical effects
rocking the earth, and darkening
frhe sun, and rending the rocks
and the mountains, you may
hear the voice of the Master as
he cries, ‘My God, my God, why
hast thou forsaken me,’ you may
cry out ‘Truly this is the great-
est of all tragedies of history,’
you may stand by the open sep-
ulchre and by the preponderance
of the1- evidence, may prefer to
believe the miracle of Christ’s
resurrection rather than believe
that the church of God has fol-
lowed a myth for twenty cent-
uries. In this you will be ortho-
dox, but you are not saved.
“It is vital faith alone that can
save you. It must be a faith that
'reaches up and opens the doors
of your heart, and lets the incar-
nate Christ in to dwell within for-
ever. It does not mean that you
are to believe in any dogma or
give intellectual or emotional as-
sent to any truth. It is not the
religion of a book. You must
have faith in a vital sense. The
best definition of faith is that
given in the sacrament of the
bread. Bread goes into our sys-
tem to become bone and muscle
and brain, even ambition and
noble deeds. Therefore is bread
called the staff of life. The bread
of the sacrament represents
Christ the living^bread, and in
some inexplicable manner enters
our heart and becomes associated
with our inner lives.
“You who have all your lives
given intellectual assent to the
story of the Christ, you whose
emotions have been stirred by its
beauty and its tragedy, may you
no longer be faithless and unbe-
lieving in your lives, but may
you be brought into a personal
appreciation of Christ as your
Savior, and may He indeed be
your rock and your fortress, your
deliverer, your God, your
strength, in whom you will trust,
your buckler, and the horn of
your salvation and your high
tower.”

Congress Adjourns•
The fif£y-ninth congress has
adjourned. During its session
some very important and far
reaching reforms were effected
and some big and momentous
questions decided. The main
bone of contention for the year
was the railroad rate regulation
bill. This was however passed
after long discussions and much
juggling in committee. Just
what its effects will be cannot yet
be determined, but the changes
in railway management will
doubtless be far reaching. One
of the most decisive steps
taken by the |congress was the
fixing of the type of canal across
the Isthmus of Panama. Re-
versing the recommendation of
the majority of the committee on
interoceanic canals, the lock type
was fixed upon in perference to
the more costly sea level type.
Another most sensible act was
that of removing the internal
revenue on ethyl alcohol, where
the same is so treated with a de-
naturant as to render it unfit for
use as a beverage. This will
throw on the market one of the
best and most effective fuels
known to the arts. It is also used
in countless ways in the manu-
factures and its reduction in cost
of several hundred per cent will
work a great change in modern
manufacturing methods.
The pure pure food bill is also
a step in the right direction, and
its provisions in regard to the in-
spection of meats will do much
for the protection of the masses
against poisons from bad methods
in preparing food stuffs, filth and
disease germs gotten into the
meats through carelessness, or
lack of inclination to keep things
clean, and the deliberate inser-
tion of harmful chemicals used as
preservatives.
The admission of Indian Ter-
ritory and Oklahoma as one state
marks this session of congress as
a most notable one. The move to
admit the territories of Arizona
and New Mexico as one state was
defeated by a close margin.
In appropriations, the expend-
iture of some $900,000,000 was
authorized; $25,000,000 of which
was for the erection of public
buildings. The appropriation for
the care of the state militia was
increased, and $1,325,000 is to be
expended for the Jamestown Ex-
position. A bill was drafted to
preserve the scenic beauty of
Niagara Falls, and passed.
The matter of tariff regulation
was not taken up owing, it is
thought, to the fact that the
president was already committed
to other measures and knew that
it was impossible to enact these
and reform the tariff in one ses-
sion of congress. The president
has expressed himself as well
pleased with the results of the
last congress although there was
some friction between himself
and congress during the session.
