for the second night’s stop. The
fas spent in Cimarron
10 miles from Phil-
‘ Ranch headquarters.
About 10, a. m; on the fdurth
day, the bqys arrived at Philmont
and prepared for several days of
exciting hiking and damping over
the thousands of acres of moun-
tainous terrain which makes up
the large ranch. The local unit
w identified gg avis (South
Bound Expedition Nb. 12) at the
ranch where approximately 2,700
scouts are regularly in attendance
during the summer months.
After three days training and
preparation at Ponidl, Phibnont’s
top camp, the boys started out on
a series of day-long hikes stop-
ping each night at a different
camp. The camps, some known as
base camps and others as trail
camps, are located in the pic-
turesque mountains of northern
New Mexico and range from eight
to 20 miles apart. Camps Dean,
Harlan, Cimarron Cito, Black
Mountain, Rayado, Abreu and
Carson Maxwell were visited in
that order.
Along the route the boys stud-
ied bird and animal life, conser-
vation and other outdoor routines
and cooked their own meals. Most
of the foods were the dehydrated
type and cooking was done chiefly
in Dutch ovens. The local group
traveled as a unit and their camp-
ing equipment' and provisions
were carried by five burros.
The boys distinguished them-
selves as good campers and woods-
men end brought beck

The class was engaged in an-
swering oral history questions
when the teacher came to Doro-
thy. “Now, Dorothy, tell me how-
many presidents the United States
has had up to the present day,’'
requested the teacher.
The little girl thought for a
minute or two and said: “I believe
there were eighteen.” “Dorothy,
I’m surprised at you,” came back
the teacher. “Why, when I was
your age I could name every one
of them.”
“I shouldn’t wonder,” laughed
Dorothy, and the rest of the class
with her. “There were only three
at that time.”
Small Elizabeth came to school
one day in a ''state of suppressed
excitement. Going straight to the
teacher’s desk, she exclaimed ex-
ultantly, “I’ve got a new little
sister.” “How very nice,” replied
the teacher.
“Yes,” said Elizabeth, “but this
is only a half sister.”
“Why, that doesn’t make any
difference, does it?”
“No, but I never can under-
stand where the other half is.”
A tourist speeding along the
highway at 100 miles an hour was
stopped by a patrolman. “Was I
driving too fast?” asked the tour-
ist.
"Heck no,” replied the patrol-
man. “You were flying too low.”
