ALBA-GOLDEN BASKETBALL
Panthers win physical battle, dominate 6.S.
By LARRY TUCKER
The Democrat Staff
Just when you thought the Mineola game
was a physical battle, the Bulldogs 48-39 loss at
Alba-Golden Friday night could be termed rug-
ged and brutal at times. Three referees were on
the floor for the epic battle and they simply let
the teams play.
It was a solid defensive battle between two
good teams. The Panthers avenged an earlier
44-30 loss at Quitman. A-G's junior post, Dal-
ton Wright, had possibly his best all around
game of the year. He battled his way for 14
points in and around the bucket claiming nu-
merous rebounds.
In the first quarter, the two teams went back
and forth with the Panthers claiming a 12-10
lead going into the second stanza. Alba-Gold-
en's Kyle Morrow hit a big bucket to give the
Panthers a 14-12 lead. The Panthers increased
that lead to 20-12 when Henry hit a free throw
to make it a 20-13 game. The Bulldogs clawed
back to cut the lead to 20-17 when Wright hit
a buzzer beater to put the Panthers up 22-17 at
the half.
The Panthers' Logan Miller made the second
of two charity tosses to knot the game at 31-31
going into the bruising final quarter.
Dylan Harle started A-G off with a triple in
the fourth quarter to give them a 34-31 lead, but
Quitman came right back with a slicing lay-up
to cut it to 34-33. Seconds later a Bulldog shot
gave Quitman their final lead of the night at 35-
34. With the score 38-37 Wright hit a jump shot
at 2:35 and followed it with another at 1:23 to go
to give the Panthers a 43-37 lead.
The Bulldogs fought desperately on offense
but could not get a shot to fall and they were
forced to foul. Harle would hit six of six free
throws in the final minute as the Panthers out-
lasted the Bulldogs in the 48-39 win.
A-G remains in third place in district at 6-3
while Edgewood leads the race at 8-1.
Last Tuesday the Panthers defeated Grand Sa-
line in dominant fashion, 68-27.
A-G faced Winnsboro on Tuesday but results
were unavailable due to Monitor press time.

Lady Panthers notch big wins
over Quitman, Grand Saline
Alba-Golden's Macie Ar-
rington burned the nets for
five long-range three-point
shots in the first half, leading
the eighth-ranked Lady Pan-
thers to a decisive 97-31 win
over Quitman Friday night.
Arrington, , who is set to
sign to play collegiately at
UT-Tyler this Friday, ended
the evening with 31 points,
including five treys. The Lady
Panthers led 20-0 before Tori
Houck scored a bucket with
2:52 to go in the opening quar-
ter. The quarter ended with
Alba-Golden up 33-6.
The Lady Panther press
caused the Lady Bulldogs to
make numerous turnovers in
the first half allowing Alba-
Golden to get several lay-up
opportunities. By the half, the
Lady Panthers had increased
their lead to 55-12.
In the second half, Alba-
Golden dropped in 42 points
to 19 for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Panthers connected
on 12 three-point shots led by
Arrington's five while Jordan
Dawson chipped in four.
For the Lady Panthers Ar-
rington had 31, Dawson 18,
Wright and Caitlin Lennon 10
each, Weissert eight, Kaylee
Bizzell seven, CeTara Carter
five, Gracie Pendergrass four,
and two each from Raven
Johnson and Brooke Brickey.
"They (A-G) have to be one
of the top five teams in the
state," Quitman Coach Joe
Jones said. "If they are not, I
would hate to see the teams
supposed to be ahead of
them."
The Lady Panthers defeated
the Grand Saline Lady Indians
77-29 last Tuesday to improve
their district record to 10-0.

53-51 prompting Winnsboro to
call timeout with 3:58 left in the
game.
Both teams continued to
battle but Lincoln Fischer and
the rest of the Yellowjackets
wouldn't be denied. Lincoln
Fischer and Ogueri hit clutch
shots as the game was tied at 57
with just 1:33 left in the game.
Lincoln Fischer hit two big
free throws to put Mineola
ahead 59-57 and the Jacket de-
fense only gave up one more
point in the final minute.

Jackets only scored six points in the
third quarter, four of which were
scored by McCalla, as Mineola was
down 42-28 going into the fourth
quarter.
Meankins scored another bucket
and Almuete scored after receiving a
great pass from Green which put the
scoreboard at 32-49. Madalyn New-
ell hit two free throws and Green
ended the game with her own 5-0
run but it wasn't enough as the Lady
Jackets ultimately fell 62-40.
McCalla led the way offensively for
the Lady Js with 11 points followed
by Meankins who chipped in eight.
Last Tuesday, the host Quitman
Lady Bulldogs broke open a very
close contest by outscoring Mineola
13-2 during the opening minutes of
the second quarter. They then with-
stood a spirited fourth quarter come-
back by the Lady Jackets to defeat
Mineola 49-39.
Quitman built a 43-26 lead at the
end of the third quarter but with Ma-
dalyn Newell scoring eight points in
the fourth quarter the Lady Jackets
mounted a response that got them
within seven points, trailing 46-39,
with 2:23 remaining in the game.
With Quitman slowing the game
and Mineola not able to take advan-
tage of the few scoring opportunities
they did earn, the Lady Jackets failed
to score any more points.
Newell led the way offensively
for the Lady Js with 10 points fol-
lowed by Keaundra Meankins who
chipped in eight.
Head Girls Basketball Coach Billy
Dunn said, "We played really well
and got after them in the fourth
quarter. We cut our deficit to six in
the fourth quarter after being down
20 earlier in the game. We need to
do that for the other three quarters
as well. Turnovers were the major
cause of our downfall. We have got
to handle the ball better to have a
chance."
The Lady Jackets faced Harmony
on Tuesday but results were unavail-
able due to Monitor press time.
Next up Mineola Winona plays
Friday for Senior Night beginning at
4 p.m.
sion game with 25 seconds left.
Winnsboro couldn't get a
quality shot against the stout
Mineola defense and as Craw-
ford's free throw found the
mark Mineola was up 62-58,
with just 13 seconds left. Nei-
ther team scored the rest of the
way as Mineola held on to their
lead. As the buzzer sounded
Mineola took the tight contest,
62-58.
Mineola Head Basketball
Coach Ryan Steadman said, "I
thought Lincoln played really
well. I think Travis Browning
and Frankie Meason came in
and played really big minutes
and also played really well.
We broke down defensively at
times but Winnsboro played re-
ally well."
Lincoln Fischer led the way
offensively with 19 points.
Ogueri and Browning also
scored in double digits with 12
and 10 points, respectively.
Last Tuesday Quitman's Ev-
an Henry lit up the Mineola de-
fense for 10 first quarter points
and the Bulldogs went on to
defeat Mineola 58-50 in what
was a sometimes very bruising
contest.
Mineola's Lincoln Fischer an-
swered Henry's opening bar-
rage with eight points of his
own and with three-pointers by
Ogueri, Travis Browning and
Sinches, Mineola stayed within
striking distance, trailing 24-17
after eight minutes of play.
The Jackets battled back to
tie the game at 28-28 and re-
mained within a point, trailing
41-40 late in the third quarter.
But then the Jackets were out-
scored 6-2 early in the fourth
quarter and never recovered.
The Yellowjackets faced Har-
mony on Tuesday but results
were unavailable due to Moni-
tor press time.
