Sheriff's Report
Police Report
Wood County Sheriff's
Department activities for
the past week included:
Jan. 27 - A woman who
resides in the Hawkins
area stated that while
checking her online bank
statement, she discov-
ered a charge she did not
authorize. The transac-
tion, $537.17 to Time
Warner of New York, was
credited back to her bank
account. The woman
was issued a new debit
card to prevent further
charges.
A man at Holiday Vil-
lages reported his dog
was stolen. The man
said the dog's collar was
unlatched and left ly-
ing on the ground. The
man was told to contact
local shelters and veteri-
nary offices. A lieutenant
learned the dog was im-
planted with a microchip
and told the man to con-
tact the microchip service
and tell them the dog
was suspected stolen. A
photo of the dog was put
on social media with the
owner's contact informa-
tion.
Jan. 26 - A deputy was
dispatched to Private
Road 5883 on a report
of illegal burning. The
deputy recognized the
address as one he had
been to several times on
the same complaint. He
also noted a cloud of
dark smoke coming from
a pile of debris near the
residence. Examining
the burn pile, the deputy
saw blackened wiring,
electrical components,
batteries and braided fi-
berglass sleeves consis-
tent with insulation for
electrical wiring. After
speaking with the home's
resident and noted that
she had been issued mul-
tiple warnings in the past
for the same offense, the
deputy placed Sharon
Kay Elkins, 55, of Yantis
under arrest. She faces a
charge of violation of the
clean air act.
A woman on County
Road 2230 stated she
got a call from someone
who identified themself
as a representative of the
IRS. The woman was
told she owed $3,788 to
the IRS and was instruct-
ed to purchase Green
Dot cards and call them
with the card informa-
tion. The woman did as
instructed and sent him
$1,760. The man stated
he would be calling at 9
a.m. the next day to ne-
gotiate a payment sched-
ule for the balance. The
woman later began to
doubt the legitimacy of
the call. Photos were tak-
en of the Green Dot cards
and the receipt.
Jan. 25 - A man on
County Road 4830 said
he was attempting to
change the combination
to the lock on a gun safe
when his wife got in front
of him and would not let
him close the door of the
safe. The man also said
he is currently trying to
get a divorce from the
woman and while he was
on the phone with the
sheriff's department his
wife called 911 and re-
ported the man was chok-
ing her and being abu-
sive. A deputy noted the
woman bore no marks
consistent with her story.
The woman said she only
wanted her three guns,
one shotgun and two
pistols. The woman re-
trieved her guns and the
couple agreed to separate
for the day.
Jan. 24 - A woman
on County Road 1416
said that someone en-
tered her home through
a unlocked door and
removed several items
without her consent. An
antique wedding band,
a man's gold wedding
band and miscellaneous
other items of jewelry
with a collective value of
$3,223 were taken.
A woman on County
Road 2560 stated she saw
a white pickup parked on
the side of the road earli-
er in the day and a white
refrigerator was in the
bed of the truck. Later
in the day, a refrigerator
matching the one in the
back of the pickup was
seen dumped in the ditch
of the road.
Jan. 23 - A deputy was
called to Yantis High
School when a minor
was reportedly drink-
ing alcohol. The deputy
arrived to find a young
man sitting on a tailgate
and noted he smelled of
alcohol. When asked if
he had been drinking
he admitted that he had
consumed two or three
beers. A 30-pack of beer
was sitting in plain view.
The deputy took custody
of the beer and placed
Samuel Tanner Earle, 17,
of Tyler under arrest for
minor consumption of al-
cohol and minor in pos-
session of alcohol. The
vehicle was released to a
friend at Earle's request.
Jan. 22 - A female em-
ployee at C&C Country
Store stated a man pur-
chased a piece of candy
then exposed himself to
her. The woman also sat-
ed the man then asked to
use the restroom where
he changed from pa-
jama pants into regular
pants before leaving the
store. The woman was
able to get a photo of the
company vehicle being
driven by the suspect. A
sergeant made contact
with the man's employer
and obtained a name and
driver's license number
of the suspect. A photo
of the suspect was posi-
tively identified as the
man who exposed him-
self to the woman. The
woman said she did want
to pursue charges against
the man.
Jan. 21 - A burglary oc-
curred on County Road
2774 and a sergeant
found the rear door had
been forced open caus-
ing the door jamb to
split. Multiple items
were missing including
two guns, cash, an iPod
Air and a jewelry box
along with its contents.
The total value of the
items initially reported
missing was $14,000.
The complainant later
discovered more items
missing after checking
the entire house. Other
items missing included
a camcorder, a wedding
dress, a backpack which
contained a rangefinder,
binoculars and miscella-
neous game calls. Several
Apple electronics, a lap-
top and a box containing
approximately 100 old
comic books were also
taken.
A man on Farm-to-
Market Road 2869 said he
had been playing cards
and drinking with two
friends when one of them
began waving a pistol
around. The man said he
and the other man pres-
ent managed to get the
gun from the third man.
He said the ammuni-
tion and magazine were
given back to the man
but due to concerns for
their safety, the gun was
not given back. At the
reporting party's request,
a deputy took possession
of the gun and transport-
ed it to the sheriff's office.
