Recycle and make a tiger happy
If the holidays have left you with
a stack of stuff you'd call trash,
there's an option besides throw-
ing all of that away.
There is an entity in the area in
charge of recycling that is called
the Upper Sabine Valley Solid
Waste Management District. They
maintain a recycling center in
Quitman and also accept items
at three transfer stations. Recy-
clables can also be dropped off in
the Walmart parking lot in Mine-
ola once a month, and curbside
pickup of cardboard is available.
Cardboard isn't the only thing
that gets recycled. The district also
accepts newspapers, aluminum
cans and #1 and #2 plastics (which
bear the recycling symbol).
The recycling center is located a
111 Westside Drive in Quitman.
The precinct substations are: Pet.
1, 1216 County Road 1912, Yantis;
Pet. 2, 705 CR 2353, Golden (near
the Wood County Airport) and
Pet. 3 at 2589 CR 3940 in Hawkins.
Each of these locations also has a
container for recycling automo-
bile oil for those who do home oil
changes. These locations are open
9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through
Saturday. In addition to Sundays
and Mondays, they are closed on
all holidays.
The drop off is hosted by the
Mineola Rotary Club at the
Walmart parking lot on the third
Saturday. It is held from 9 a.m.
to noon. The same items are ac-
cepted.
And for those who have stacks
of cardboard, you can call the sol-
id waste supervisor, David Davis
at 903-763-2123 and let him know.
Curbside pickup is available in
Mineola every Tuesday and Thurs-
day. In Winnsboro that's Tuesday
and Friday; Lake Fork Thursday
and Hawkins on Wednesday.
Plastic shopping bags can be
dropped off at the Doggone Good
Thrift Store, a fundraiser for APET
that uses donated bags instead of
purchasing their own. The thrift
store opens at 10 a.m. on Thursday
through Saturday and it is located
on South Pacific Street. Recycling
containers are also set up in front
of Brookshire's and Walmart for
the plastic bags.
And, if you want to double your
fun with an old live Christmas
tree, it can be taken to Tiger Creek
Wildlife Refuge. "The tigers will
love them," said a spokesperson,
"just like they do the pumpkins."
However, they cannot use trees
that have been treated with flame
retardant chemicals or flocking.
Tiger Creek is located a 17552
Farm-to-Market 14, Tyler. They're
open Monday through Saturday,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A WILD PELICAN CHASE
Breakfast with
a Heart set
this Saturday
On Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m. Breakfast with
a Heart will be held to benefit the Bread of Life
Ministry's Food Pantry at First Christian Church
on North Pacific Street.
The ministry's all-you-can-eat breakfast in-
cludes sausage, ham, bacon, eggs, pancakes, bis-
cuits and gravy, jams and jellies, coffee and or-
ange juice.
The suggested donation is $6 for adults and $3
for children under the age of eight.

A flock of pelicans was reported
on Lake Kim Juan west of Mine-
ola Monday morning. It may not
have been major news, but was
definitely noteworthy and feature
photo worthy. However, the birds
had vacated that lake when a
Monitor photographer was able
to leave on deadline to get the
photo. The photographer decided
to look at nearby Lake Holbrook
and was shooting a photo of ducks
floating very closely together when
these pelicans came in for a land-
ing. The flock of pelicans was also
seen earlier that morning in Quit-
man. Several different types of
birds were active at Lake Holbrook
that morning, including a white
goose that swooped past. (Photos
