Mineola Memorial Library Notes
BY LIBRARIAN MARY HURLEY
Hasn't the end of sum-
mer been great with the
nice cool temperatures?
Now we are into autumn
and hopefully the cool
temperatures are here to
stay for a while.
Almost all programs at the library re-
sumed in September. Terrific Tuesdays
really have been terrific with lots of teen
and tweens as well as our elementary-age
crowd. They are Tuesdays at 4 p.m. for
about 30 minutes with parents remaining
on the premises.
PreSchool Story Time is getting itself fig-
ured out with a new age group and learn-
ing what works best for them. This group
meets on Wednesday mornings at 11:15
a.m. for up to 30 minutes. We are learning,
so our goal is to get to 30 minutes.
Jimmy is still teaching guitar on Thurs-
day afternoons beginning about 2:30 p.m.
Crochet meets twice a month. Come by
the library and talk to Robin about what
they are up to on the second Saturdays of
the month at 2 p.m. and fourth Saturdays
at 10 a.m.
Computer Q & A has returned to the first
and third Saturdays of the month at 9:30
a.m. Many thanks to Kevin for filling in for
our regular Q & A. Space is limited so re-
serve your spot today for the next session
on Oct. 18.
American Girls visited with Kaya in
September and will learn about Felicity's
school in October. Be sure to sign up by
Oct. 8 for this program for girls with their
mothers.
ESL returns tomorrow, Thursday, from 6
to 7:30 p.m. This is a class for non-native
English speakers to improve their skills.
The fall session will last eight weeks and
then break for the holidays and resume in
January.
For those interested in GED, visit the
Quitman Public Library on Thursday after-
noons beginning Thursday. Call 903-763-
4191 for details. You will need pencil and
paper and a readiness to study.
Both GED and ESL are part of a Dollar
General Literacy Grant through a Circle of
Ten's Gateway to American Opportunities
initiative.
Representatives of the Mineola Memo-
rial Library will be at the nature preserve
on Saturday, Oct. 18 reading stories to the
children as part of NatureFest.
We are hoping to have a Hello Kitty cel-
ebration on Saturday, Oct.25. Can you be-
lieve Hello Kitty has been around for 40
years? Call the library for details closer to
the date.
Now that you are aware of all the activi-
ties going on at the library, don't forget to
come by and check out a book or two. Peo-
ple are still reading!
We have e Books through Freading
which can be found on our catalog page
on our website www.mineolalibrary.com.
You must have a newer eReader and Ado-
be digital to use this service.
Project Gutenberg offers older public
domain titles that may be downloaded to
your computer and LibriVox offers record-
ed books that are also in the public domain.
There is really something for just about
everyone at the Mineola Memorial Library.
Come by and see us!
Remember, the Mineola Memorial Li-
brary is a 501(c)3 non-profit and all dona-
tions are tax-deductible.
The library received memorials for Gene
Mallory from the Knights, the Boswells,
the Norrises, and the Calkins families.

Domestic Violence Awareness month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and
the East Texas Crisis Center Wood County Outreach
office is focused on education and public awareness to
aid in the prevention of domestic violence.
On Monday, Oct. 6 the Crisis Center joined the na-
tion by candlelight in honor of all the victims - men,
women and children, who have lost their lives to do-
mestic violence. This annual candlelight vigil was a
nationwide ceremony that traditionally takes place on
the first Monday of October, also known as the "Day
of Unity."
The Crisis Center Wood County Outreach is cur-
rently organizing efforts for a countywide "Silent
Witnesses" candlelight vigil ceremony to be held next
year, Oct. 5 at Jim Hogg Park in Quitman.
Domestic violence affects everyone. According to
The Domestic Violence Resource Center, one in every
four women will experience domestic violence in her
lifetime; three women are killed by their partners ev-
ery day, nationwide; 74 percent of Americans know a
victim of domestic violence.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides the
opportunity to focus efforts on honoring fallen vic-
tims, increasing awareness and promoting preven-
tion. The group wants people to understand that do-
mestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of
age, race, geographic region, religion, financial status,
educational levels, sexual orientation or gender.
If you or someone you know is being abused, call
the Crisis Center Wood County Outreach office at 903-
342-6111.

the house, but that it hit an electri-

The ministry's all-you-can-eat
breakfast includes sausage, ham,
bacon, eggs, pancakes, biscuits
and gravy, jams and jellies, coffee

That's what blew everything."

Mineola and Mineola's aviation
history. Cynthia's parents were
Beth and Everett Nix who resided
in Mineola for many years. Ev-
erett's uncle was Henry Wisener
from Mineola Wisener Field, the
oldest privately held airport in
the state of Texas. Everett learned
to fly at an early age and went
on to become chief pilot for Delta
Airlines. The Savellis'1939 MGTB
was purchased from Bob Wisener,
Henry's son, 20 years ago and has
since undergone a complete resto-
ration.
In hosting this car show, the
Savellis wanted to give the Reg-
istry members a taste of East
Texas. In addition to the public
Saturday car show, the members
will attend private events includ-
ing a Thursday night wine tasting
at Mineola's Grand Oaks Winery,
a Friday drive to Mount Pleasant
to tour the Mid America Flight
Museum, lunch at Mineola Coun-
try Club and then a tour of Wi-
sener Field led by Bob and Lupita
Wisener. While at Wisener Field
members will be given the oppor-
tunity to ride in a vintage open
cockpit Stearman bi-plane.
The members will also be treated
to barbecue and live music at the
Savellis' ranch featuring Mineola
singer/songwriter Thomas Lynn
Wade and his band, Grand Sa-
line's Matt Fisher and Lindale's
Heather Little. Saturday lunch is
being catered by Taste Buds and
the awards banquet will be held at
the Historic Beckham Hotel with a
catered dinner from Fatt Apple ca-
tering from Lindale.
