connection with the confidence
game swindling or theft of money
from Sam Wallace, has been re-
leased on bond.
Robert Terrill Cooey was indic-
ed for forging two checks on the
Rev. J. Bryant Young. He is in
the Louisiana Penitentary, and will
be brought to Carthage upon his
release far trial.
The criminal docket will he call-
ed at 10 a.m. Jan. 20 and Jan. 10
will be a jury week.
The officers and board of direc-
tors of the Panola County United
Fund heard the report ef Lovell
Kelley, chairman of the Fund Cam-
paign. at a meeting held at 2 p m.
Tuesday at the county courtroom.
The report showed 09 per cent
of the $19,000 quota collected,
which compares favorably with
the national average of 77 per cent.
It was voted to offer payment
&n the basis of 89 percent of con-
tract with each participating a-
gency provided they would agree
not to stage a separate drive this
year.
A nominating committee was
named by L. L. Crowl. president, in-
cluding Wayne LaGrone, chairman;
W. V. Tillery, J. D. Jimerson and
W. H. Patterson. These will report
at the annual public meeting In
June with a slate of nominees. At
the same meeting 10 directors will
be chosen for a three-year term.

In further action, the date of
the annual Chamber of Commerce
dinner was moved up a week to
March 19 due to a conflicting date
the speaker had announced.
A rather lengthy discussion was
held an the acquisition of o perma-
nent airport for Carthage. The poe-
siblities will he explored by the
Highway and Transportation Com-
mittee which includes J. L. Bun-
yard. chairman; Judge E. C. Win-
frey, Q. M Martin, Travis William-
son, and Worth Vaadigriff.
A committee to nominate offi-
cers for the Panola County Cham-
ber of Commerce for the coming
year was named by Pres. L. L.
S. L. Allums

stamps would be used to finance that coun-
try’s fight on tuberculosis. The group had
set a goal of 15,000 stamps, but exceeded

Next Thursday
Don Reynolds of Pittsburg, fin-
is, vice-president of the Texas Pol-

guest speaker at the meeting of
the Panola County Cattlemen's As-
sociation, Jan. 19.
Mr. Reynolds, who is an out-
standing cattle breeder and live-
stock judge, will use “Improvment
of Beef Cattle in East Texas” as
his subject.
The meeting is scheduled at 7
p.m. at Panola College.
Other important business will
be the election of officers for 1961.
President Glynn R. Brooks of
the Association, urge's all mem-
bers to be pro'ent.
FUneral services were haM at
2:90 p.m. Wednesday at Rehobeth
Methodist Churrh for Solomon Lee
Allums, 81, who died Tuesday at
Panola General Hospital. He was
a retired farmer residing on Rural
Route 2. Carthage.
' A native of the county, he was
a member of the Methodist Church.
Officiating ministers were the
Rev. Royce Robb and the Rev. J.
Bryant Young. Burial, under the
direction of the Hawthorn Funer-
al Home, was in the Rehobeth Ce-
metery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Lena Allums. Carthage; one son,
Aaron Allums, Houston; three dau-
ghters, Mrs. Joyce Whitaker, Car-
thage; Mrs. J. W. Whitaker. Paris
and Mrs. Linus Jarvis, Sherman;
10 grandchildren and 17-great-
grandchildren.

Mrs. Allan explained, "art we
felt an immediate response aa
stamps began pouring in by mail
aa well as the boxes”. Mrs. Allen
added, “This is another instance
of the public service spirit of Mr.
Clements and the Watchman. Wa
certainly want to thank you”.
“Our own grade school helped
when they began a contest be-
tween the 9th, 8th, 7th, and 8th
grades to see which could collect
the most stamps for us”, she ex-
plained, "These youngsters really
worked turning in a total of 12.-
000 stamps with the winning 9th
grade alone contributing 9900

Mrs. Taylor became emaciated
with tha hank in 1944 and kas
served as cashier and amlatent then-
president. She Is believed la ho the
only woman executive vice-presi-
dent of s bank in Texas. Than are
women vice-presidents but they
are nominal officials. At laoat, Mrs
Taylor is one of a very few women
with executive responsibilities in
a small town bank.
SUCCESSFUL YBAR
"Oar goal was 19,000 stamps and
we*ve nearly doubled that amount
reaching a total of 2TJSS stamps
with more coming in dally”. Mrs.
Allen pointed out, “We are so
thankful for every ones help, es-
pecially to the people of Beckville,
Carthage, Gary, and Deadwood
I am sure that the money receiv-
ed from the sale of these stamps
will go a long way toward helping
treat the children of Norway who
have tuberculosis. Thank you for
your help in this worthy cause”.
- The stamps have been sorted
packaged and mailed to the sons
of Norway organisation in Minnea-
polis, Minnesota who will send
them on to Norway whore they
will he distributed to stamp or-
ganisation for sale. The money will
be used in Norway’s TB program.
Two new projects were discuss-
ed at the January meeting of the
Panola Hospital auxiliary.
Committees were appointed for
the two projects, installation of
gas lights around the hospital and
memorialising of the new hospital
rooms.
Mrs. Emory from the Good Shep-
herd Hospital in Longview will
speak to the group at the next
meeting, February 1. at 2:30 on
“Volunteer Service to the Hospi-
tal”.
The Auxiliary will also continue
the blood bank project this year.

has not responded yet, the Auxil-
iary asks that you call now and put
your name on the list.

Highway Meet
At Beckville
Set Tuesday
The Carthage City Commission
passed an ordinance creating a
Municipal Defense and Disaster
Relief Committee at its monthly
meeting Monday night. The com-
mittee will include nine members
to be headed by Mayor Fred Jenk-
ins as municipal defense co-ordina-
tor. The ordinance also creates
this latter office.
The committee will be empower-
ed to rope with emergencies threat-
ening life and property in the City
of Carthage; will authorize co-
operation and mutual aid agree
ments with other city and county
groups for relief work The or-
dinance also will prohibit unauthor-
ized lights and warning all-clear
signals and provides fines up to
$200 for violations
The committee will be named
as soon at people who will serve

In other business coming before
the Commission, a new Chevrolet
car was purchased for the use of
the City.

tended the annual meeting of the
Northeast Texas Industrial Deve-
lopment Council in Longview Tues-
day night

said Tuesday.
A full slate of end men has been
chosen with the addition this week
of Wayne LaGrone and L. E. Page.
Others are K. C. Kyle, BUI Apple-
gate. H. A. Clinton, and David
Clabaugh, W. C. (Buster) Hebert
will be intereocutor.
A list of the Minstrel Maids for
the 1861 show has also been re-
leased. Included are Lynn McGee.
Peggy Listen. Pat Rowland. Patsy
Bush, Margaret Harfcrider, Judy
Clabaugh. Georgia Scott and Gayle
Winftey. These will be trained in
their specialty by Mrs. Joan Mc-
Gee.
