Opposition In the Proposed Incrrnae

London rebruary Copyrighted 1837
by the Associated 1ress Tho govern
mcnls educational bill Is denounced by tho
liberals as being sectarian and dlsttnally
unjust
The defeat ot the conservative candidate
Mr Dewar by Mr Woods liberal viae
lirgely due to the educatloual proposals
Mr Joseph Chamberlain the secretary of
state for the colonies still further enhanced
his reputation In splendid fighting speech
In reply to Sir William Vernon Harcourt
the liberal leader Inthe house ot commons
who fared very badly at Mr Chamberlains
bands The newspapcis generally warmly
compliment him upon his speech which un-
doubtedly greatly strengthened his position
among tho conservatives
The secend reading of the woman s fran-
chise bill In no wise means its adoption
this srsslon The votn only places It In a
favorable position and after Whitsuntide
It will bo strenuously opposed and baa no
chance of becoming a hw During the de
bat tho ladles gallerUs wero packel and
he remarks ot the supporters of tho mens
uro were pumturcd by tho waving ot white
handkerchiefs whlln lh speeches of the
opponents of the bill wero greeted with
loud expressions of feminine disgust The
lobbies were Invaded by slrongnilndcd fe
males and there was some amiilng srencs
of buttonholing members until the latter
were actually afraid to piss through
The governments piopnsil to Incicase tho
number of battalions of guards an I station
a portion of this form at ilibrnllnr has oc-
casioned a great osttery It Is declared that
the step virtually mcan the ruin of the
guards whose present strength is only
maintained by decreasing their standard of
ptivslque The officers predict that tho
guards will ceoso to be a crack carps and
that they will be reduced to the level of a
lino regiment It Is also asserted that
then Is no spice at Gibraltar for properly
training the guardsmen nnd moreover it Is
hinted that the smartest officers vlll resign
If they are compelled io go abroad a3 many
of them would bo uinblo to supervise their
property and estates In Encland without
Interfering with their military duties So
ciety is also opposed to thn transfer a3 tho
absenco of the oung guardsmen would de
prlve tho season of much of Its eclat
The propoaal to add another battalion
to tho Cameron Highlanders Is also re < elv
ed with little favor among tho Cameronlans
who prdo them elves on being recruited
from Ihe heather and the proposed addition
would Mv claim simply mean the enlist
ment of a host ot East End cockneys who
have alread > made the highland regiments
the butt ut considerable chaff
Tho Hole expresses surmise that nothing
has been seen of the Canadian proposal to
recruit a leglment of tho lino locally and
assumes that somo hitch has occurred
The llohe adds It would certslnly bo
an enormous Rain if all tho great eolonles
would undertake to contribute to the Im-
perial definra on the lines suggested by
Canadian patriotism
It Is staled that on Ihe occasion of th

To tbe Editor of Tho Post
San Antonio Texas February I I am
of tho opinion that our liberties are In
danRcr from the wave ot religious med-
dling that from tlmo to time tries to forco
laws Into our statuts that are unjust
unconstitutional and tyrannical I refer
to law a generally el led Laws to pre-
vent the desecration of tho Sabbath
Tho editor ot The Pest gave us a spicn
dll editorial on tho subject and was criti
cised by Dr A L Wray Now It Is my
Intention lo more fully elaborate the edi-
tors position and show tho constitutional
grounds for opposition to such laws and
at the samo tlmo Bhow Dr Wray come Of
bis errors
Perhaps Sunday laws aro not sumptuary
legislation but they aro paternalistic
which If anything Is worse and as they
aro Intended to prevent people from at
tending games and sports at which an
admission fee Is charged they may bo
safely stled sumptuary to thit extent
at least
Why Is it any worse to keep theaters
Iieer gardens and other places of a similar
character open on Sunday than It Is any
other day of the week
Is not a thing that is bad ono day but
all tho time
Is it any worse to steal lie swear gel
drunk murder or swindle on Sunday than
it Is on Monday or any other day ot tho
week
May It not be retorted to tho advocates
of Sunday laws that they wish to prohibit
to church and diop thoir money into the
lontrlhutlon box
Of course the Slato has no right to desig-
nate a day of rtdlglous worship
Here la good pioot tlmt It has not Ar-
ticle 1 amendment to our National consti-
tution Congress bhall make no law re-
specting an establishment ot religion or
prohibiting tho free excrclso thereof
Our National treaty with Tripoli signed
In 1707 sava Tho government of tho
United States ot America Is not In any
censn founded on tho Christian religion
Article I section 2 of tho constitution
says This constitution nnd tho laws of
tho Inlted Slates which shall ho made
In pursuance thereof and all treaties made
or which shall be mado under tlio author-
ity of tho Inlted States shall bo the su
premo law of tho land and tbe Judges in
every Statu shall be bound thetehy any-
thing In tho constitution or laws ot any
State to the contrary notwithstanding
Ily carefully studying these quota-
tions Dr Wray will seo that all laws to
designate any day as a day of religious
olwervanro la contrary to our constitu-
tion
Two kinds of laws may bo made for Sun-
day that would hold good One would be-
lo prohibit il 1 kinds of work on Sunday
but as this would Include tho preacher
It will not bo urged by Dr Wray gr other
advocates of Sunday laws and If an ex-
ception is In the favor ot churches then
the law becomes unconstitutional as class
legislation
the either way would be to prohibit com-
pulsory labor ami at thn same tinio allow
every iirson to spen 1 the day m suit him-
self subject to tho same laws that aro In
force oilier days against robbery etc
