the field in some instances, in
reporting the games. Those were
the days when the players had
no nu>ntiers and you had to credit
the runner according to his po-
sition. The left halfback invar-
iably would run around right
end, the right halfback around
left end. the fullback Into the
line, nnd of course the quarter-
back was always just hack of
center barking signals, so there
was little doubt about who was
playing and making the plays
When It rained there might he
some difficulty because It was
tough to even see the game much
less firure out who was carrying
the ball. But there were few sub-
stitutes nnd the system of figurine
out who was doing what hy the
dlreotlon he ran held up pretty
good.
There cnnie n revolution
when writers pm a
table mid chair on the side-
lines and reported the games
from then*. Jinx Tucker,
the colorful sports editor of
the Waco News-Trlbone, was
among the first to use this
plan
Once Tucker was reporting a
game at Granger An Inebriated
fan had crnwled under the table
Finally he emerged, and waving
to the fans standing in front of
the table snarled "Get down,
you guys, so reporters like nt*»
and Jinx Tucker can see what's
going on!"
The real revolution came when
press boxes were Installed They
were usually very small nnd the
writers had little o tport unity to
use them what with the Pads
Club. Junior Chamber of rum-
Ellis Hull of Brady, attended the
funeral.
Other survivors are a brother,
Carroll Hteelhammer of Cleburne
nnd his grandmother. Mrs. Carl
Townsend of San Antonio.
