NO POLITIC S IN THE WAR.
The Allies see an immense ad-
vantage to the United States in
entering the war and which will
enable her to prosecute the w.ir
with a singleness of purpose im-
possible to any other belligerent.
All of the other belligerents have
a more or less selfish, ulterior
purposes to influence their mili-
tary policy, While they are do-
ing all that they can on general
principles to win the war, yet
there are particular reasons
which apfieal to each of them for
special effort in ome direction.
This, for i stance, is especial
ly true of Italy, which, besides
gaining th»- Trentino and Tri
este, has a strong desire f"r
prominence on the eastern side
of the Adriatic, in the Balkans,
upon some of the Agean Islands
and Smyrna.
On the other hand, the United
States has not the slightest pri-
vate interest or desire. All that
she wishes is to destroy the mili
tarv power of the Prussian gang,
and she can go straight at this
by the very best route that pre-
sents itself to her generals. It
is nothing to u- how the map of
Europe shall be arranged after
the war and as to who shall get
what. The first and only thing
in which we are interested, or
will be interested, is the com-
plete overthrow of the military
power of the F’russian gang.
Going into the great fight thu
free-handed, we have every rea-
son to ex|H*ct quick and over-
whelming success.
