Yellow Jackets Wage Strong Fight
But Lose To McNeese State 34 - 26
By PAUL FERGUSON
The Howard Payne College
Yellow Jacket;; after taking the
lead twice fell behind to drop
their initial grid contest 34-26
to the McNeese State College
Cowboys at Lake Charles La.
Saturday night Sept. 19.
The Jackets waged a gallant
battle but fumbles and bad
breaks finally cost them the de
cision on the season opener.
The loss of Center Kenneth
Forehand and End Jim Mullins by
injuries during the game also
slowed the Jacket attack. Both
lads were injured seriously
enotigh that they were carried of
the field.
Defensive action of the Jackets
looked very good The HPC line
was continually breaking through
jtp cause the Cowboys trouble in
tnor passing tmacK. uunng the
third Quarter the Jackets held the
McNeese eleven without a single
fir-t down. J
McNeese won the toss and re-
ceived the opening kickoff mov-'
ing out to their own 40-yard line '
where they fumbled with Melvin
Lindsey recovering for the Yellow i
Jackets. Opening their first of-'
fensive drive the Jackets fought i
their way to the McNeese four j
when a fumble ended their first '
scoring threat.
After recovering the Jacket
fumble the Cowboys drove out to1
their own 25 where the Jacket
defense held and forced McNeese
to punt. Taking over on their own
25 the Stingers opened another
drive. Featuring runs by Half-
back Dave Smith and Fullback
Bill Murphy they moved out to
their own 45.
Quarterback Jerry Millsapps
transported the pigskin for a
first down on the McNeese 42.
Millsapps then hit End Jim
Mullins with a pass good for 38
yards to the McNeese 4. Mur-
phy banged into the line for
two yards: Millsapps added one
and Smith went over for the
tally with three minutes 20
seconds remaining in the initial
quarter. Melvin Lindsey booted
the extra point giving the
Jackets a 7-0 lead.
Following the kickoff the Cow-
boys turned on the steam and
drove right buck to score. Full-

University Joins
Texas Conference
Eastern New Mexico University
has been accepted as a member
of the Texas Conference Al D.
Garten athletic director reveal-
ed last month.
After receiving the invitation
to join the conference earlier in
the year EMMU officials felt af-
ter careful consideration that the
advantages gained through the
proximity of the Texas Confer-
ence members would be advan-
tageous and EMMU could at the
same time continue to schedule
colleges in New Mexico; therefore
the athletic committee accepted
the invitation.
Other members of the Texas
Conference include Texas A&T
Kingsville; McMurry College Ab-
ilene; Howard Payne College
maBrownwood; Austin College
Sherman and Abilene Christian
College Abilene.
Acting participation in the con-
ference will begin with the track
and golf meet in the spring of
1954.
Garten and the athletic com-
mittee emphasized that the Uni-
versity has not been dissatisfied
with its asociations in the New
Mexico Conference and that foot-
ball and basketball teams will be
in active competition through
next season.
back Jules DeRouen made the
tally from 13 yards out. The try
for point was good and the score
was knotted at 7-7 as the first
quarter ended.
GOING INTO THE SECOND
QUARTER the Cowboys jumped
into the lead when Val Sweeney
returned a Yellow Jacket put for
52 yards and a touchdown. The
try for extra point went wide
but the Cowboys were out front
13-7.
McNeese scored again when
Quarterback Max Jones passed to
End Jess Castett the play good
for 23 yards and the tally. Bill
Jones HPC end blocked the kick
for extra point.
Taking the kickoff for the
Jackets was Jones who return-1
oapps pitched out to Smith and!
Smith lateralled to Murphy who
got down to the McNeese 15
Charles Grimland packed the pig-
skin to the eight-yard line and
Smith moved it down to the four
for a first down and goal. Grim-
land moved to the two and Smith
carried over for the tally just
45 seconds before the tally. Lind-
sey booted the extra point nar-
rowing McNeese's lead to 19-14.
The Cowboys had the ball about
midlield as the half ended.
GOING INTO THE THIRD
QUARTER the Jackets were stall-
ed and forced to punt back on
their own 10. Lindsey was back
for the kick but the ball went
wild on a bad passback. Lindsey
picked up the oval but was drop-
ped behind tlie goal line for a
two-point safety for McNeese
moving the Cowboys ahead 21-14.
HPC kicked off following the
safety. On the first play the Cow-
boys fumbled with the Jackets
recovering on the McNeese 33.
Lindsey carried to the 29 and
Murphy moved the oval to the 21.
Millsapps tallied on a 21-yard
spree. Another bad passback caus-
ed the try for point to fail and
the Jackets still trailed 21-20.
Later in the third period Lind-
sey got off a beautiful punt from
the HPC 43 the ball rolling dead
on the Cowboys' three yard line.

The McNeese crew was held for
downs and punted out the 35. An-
other costly fumble by the Jack-
ets gave the Cowboys the ball
again on their own 20. The
Jackets held for downs and Mc-
Necsc attempted to punt. Fresh-1
man Center Robert Beal of Cole-!
man broke through to block the
kick and Jim Paul Norman
freshman from Crowell captured
the oval and scampered to pay
dirt. On another bad passback the
try for point failed but the
Jackets were out front again 26-
21. THE COWBOYS JUMPED
AHEAD again in the fourth
period when Jesse Castette ran 16
yards for a touchdown. The try
for point failed putting McNeese
one point ahead 27-20.
The Cowboys set Ilk' final
score with 42 seenHrls left in thn
game. Fullback Edward Cormier
plowed over irom the HPC five
and Ine extra point was good.
This made the final count Mc-
Neese 34 Howard Payne 20.
Statistically the Jackets seem-
ed to have the better end of the
contest but the score did not
agree. The HPC crewmen show-j
ect plenty oi spirit and plenty ol
fight but the first-game fumbl
itis was the tell-tale point.
But the gridders should show
much improvement as the season
moves along. Under the guidance
of Head Coach Guy B. Gardner
and Assistants Jack Brewer and
Bennie Williams the Stingers
may develop into a threat to
Texas Conference powers.
