Junior Varsity Show in Rehearsal;
Production Slated for November 12
The 1953 Varsity Show which
will be presented in Minis Audi-
torium Nov. 12 is now in rehear-
sals with a cast of thirty-five
working out nightly.
The Show !.; under the joint di-
rection of Bobbie Parson Joyce
Garner and Dale Gore. Clyde
Vinson head of the speech de-
partment is faculty sponsor.
Jacket Coeds Plan
for Carnival Booth
Jacket Coeds met Tuesday Oct.
20 to discu-s the booth for the
campus carnival and ways of en-
couraging more school spirit.
Committee heads were named
for the annual Coed banquet.
They are as follows: Program
Corrine Starr; Invitations Jean-
ette Meacham; Decorations Nan-
cy Barnes; Entertainment Linda
Steer; and Menu Geneva Reeves.
The constitution was read and
possible amendments were pro-
posed and discussed.

Norman Fisher is in charge of
all publicity for the show. Henry
Burton heads the house committee.
Stage sets are being construct-
ed by a committee headed by
Lecda Hae Keeler.
The leading singing role which
was to have been taken by Mary
Price is now occupied by sopho-
more Linda Steer. Singing oppo-
site her will be Don McCullough.
Music for the Show will be pro-
vided by an eight-piece ensemble
from the HPC Yellow Jacket
Band. This group is under the di-
rection of Pat McShan. Gloria
Kimbro will be pianist.
Tickets to the production are
now on sale and may be purchas-
ed from any member of the jun-
ior class according to Jerry Wil
son junior treasurer.

Debate Team Goes
To Texas Tech for
First Tournament
The Howard Payne Debate
the practice debate tournament
held at Texas Tech College.
HPC won five out of 12 debates.
Each time debated four times.
Teams entering besides HPC
were Texas Tech Texas Univer-
sity Southwest Texas State East
Central from Ada Okla. and
Abilene Christian.
This tournament gave the HPC
debalors their first opportunity
this year to face competition from
other colleges and universities on
the 1953 debate question Resolv-
ed: That the United States Should
Adopt a Policy of Free Trade.
Those making the trip were

Shows Ronnie Cox Norman Fish-
er Jack Carter Danny Proctor
and Clyde Vinson sponsor of the
club.
The debate team has received
invitations to participate in four
other tournaments this year.
These include East Central Col-
lege Ada Okla; Baylor Univer-
sity Waco; Abilene Christian Col-
lege Abilene; and Louisiana Tech
Huston La.

Choral Speaking
Group Organized
The Speech Department of HPC
has organized this year's choral
speaking group Clyde Vinson
professor of speech reports.
Plans and preperations are al-
ready underway for the group's
first program of the year.
That program will consist of
Negro poetry. The works of
James Weldon Johnson and
Langston Hughes outstanding
negro writers will be used.
There are several additions to
the club both freshmen and up-
perclassmen. Joy Goodman. Betty-
jean Harrison Ina Simmons.
Helen Lawson and Lili Crawford
aie new among the gills' voices.

Miss Merritt was selected as
one of the resource leaders to an-
alyze and study criteria and
standards for undergraduate pro-
grams now being proposed by the
Texas Board of Examiners for
Teacher Education.
11 Students Named
To Honor Society
Seventeen HPC have been
elected for membership in Alpha
Chi national honor society Dean
Z. T. Huff and Dr. Cleo McChris-
ty dean of the college and Eng-
lish professor respectively and
faculty sponsors have announced.
Requirements for membership
is a 2.50 average.
The first meeting was held in
the conference room of the Walk-
er Memorial Library Monday af-
ternoon October 2G for initiation
of new members.
Ten seniors were elected to the
HPC Track Team
Takes Third Place
Texas University walked away
with top honors in the four-way
cross country meet at Riverside
Park Thursday afternoon. The
Longhorns low total of 19 points
beat Abilene Christian Howard
Payne and Texas Christian in that
order.
Tom Rogers led the Texas crew
by striding the 2. 5 miles in 12
I minutes and 2 seconds to
take
first place
The HPC Yellow Jackets' top
men were Berna Allen who fin-
ished sixth and Allan Tipps who
came across the line in eighth
position.
Hardin-Simmons entered one
trackster and did not compete for
a team place.

Press Club Meets
The Press Club of Howard
Payne College met Monday Oct.
2G in the Yellow Jacket Office.
President Paul Ferguson was in
charge of the business meeting.
The group discussed a booth for
the campus carnival and made
plans for other club activities dur-
ing the year.
Dues for the coming semeester
were voted upon and a deadline
set for their payment.
