COOPER, TEXAS, FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 1»16.
Delta County Summer Normal opens at Cooper next
TBoaday. In point of instructions and accommodations
this normal will compare favorably with normals else-
where in the state. Delta, county teachers who are inter-
acted in the school work in this county will do well to at-,
tend this normal. They will get just as good work as else- j
wheee and will have the opportunity of keeping in close
teach with the leading educators of the county. The nor-
ad maintains a 'Bureau of Recommendations, and its ac-
- THE NEXT PRESIDENT.
Who will bo the next president of the United
States? Robert Lansing.
But it isn’t necessary to get excited about it.
It’s a fact, but a fact that needn’t upset the cam-
paign plans of any presidential candidate. The
secretary of State isn’t in politics at all. and isn’t
likely to be. No convention is going to nominate
him. He isn’t going to be elected. Nevertheless,
he’ll be the next president, and this is the way of
it.
A new law enacted in 1866 provides that when-
ever the president and vice-president are both
unable to perform the duties of the executive of-
fice, the secretary of state shall act as president.
President Wilson’s term expires at noon March
4, 1917. That is Sunday. It’s contrary to pre-
cedent, although not illegal, to hold an inaugura-
tion on Sunday. It is planned, therefore, to have
it on Monday, March 5. And so for one day,
Secretary Lansing will be president. He will
be empowered to occupy the White House if he
chooses, pardons, command the army and navy,
and even to ride to the Capitol as the out-going
president in the inaugurating ceremonies.
It will be the first time a secretary of state
has ever had such an honor, and the second time
the office has ever been held by any one except
the president or vice president.—Orange Leader.
There will be no out-going president next year, so they
bad just as well let him serve Sunday afternoon, preced-
ing hit inauguration for a second term on Monday.
