CANTON • The Van
Zandt County Com-
missioners Court approved
the hiring of a Mesquite
defense attorney as the new
assistant district attorney
Monday.
District Attorney Tom
my Wallace presented John
A. Sickel, 32, who has been
practicing in Mesquite for
two years, to the com-
missioners Monday mor-
ning. Sickel can join the
Van Zandt County DA's of
fice in two or three weeks,
depending on how the
cases that he is presently
involved with work out,
Wallace said.
The assis^nt DA's
position became open
August 1 when Karen
Kirkley resigned to go into
private practice in Canton
after a year on the job.
When approaching the
commissioners to get
authorization to hire a new
assistant. Wallace asked
that the position be funded
at a higher salary, so that
an experienced attorney
could be hired, instead of
one just out of schools*
County Judge Sam
Hilliard told Sickel that he
would be expected to meet
with the county com-
missioners during their
regular sessions to advise
them on legal matters
when qecessary, and added
that tpe court had no ob
jectiofis to the hiring.
Vivien asked wtff he
decided to switch from
defense to prosecution,
Sickel noted that the two
sides were “not incom-
patable as far as the
criminal justice svstem
goes," but added. “it
makes it a little easier for
one to sleep at night ”
As a defense attorney,
Sickel explained, he found
that “in one out of every 20
or 30 cases, the person is
innocent of the crime
they're charged with. In
prosecution, it's just the
opposite. as the vast
majority of the persons are*
guilty of what they've beer/
charged with "
H« added, "I felt that I
could make a much more
significant ifnpact on the
criminal justice system in
the district attorney’s of
fice." He quoted the
American Bar Associa-
tion's credo: “The job is
no,t to prosecute, but to do
justice.”
