Rabies test on dog
negative after bite
GRAND SALINE
Rabies test results on a dog
that attacked and severely
bit a 4-year-old Grand
Saline boy Wednesday af-
ternoon, September 19,
were negative, according
to Grand Saline
Veterinarian Dr. R. D.
Carter's office.
The boy was playing in
the driveway of his home
when he was knocked out
of his toy wagon by the
dog. Grand Saline Police
Chief Robert Bradford
said.
"He had three or four
deep gashes on his head,”
Bradford said. The boy,
identified as the son of
Loraine Djerf, was treated
and released from Cozby-
Germany Hospital after
the attack. “I saw him the
next day and he looked like
he would be all right,”
Bradford said.
The dog was kept in the
back seat of the police
patrol car for several hours
before being taken to the
Grand Saline Veterinary
Clinic, Bradford said. "He
was a very friendly dog af-
ter he was captured," he
noted. “I feel something
must have provoked the at-
tack," he added.
The dog, a mongrel with
some German shepherd
blood, had apparently
been left behind when his
owners moved about six
months ago, Bradford
said. One man in the
neighborhood said he had
fed the dog, in addition to
his own dogs, on occasion,
Bradford reported. “We
don't have the previous
owner's name or where
they moved," Bradford
said.
The dog’s head was
removed at the Veterinary
Clinic and sent to Austin
for rabies testing, and the
clinic was contacted by
telephone with the
negative results Monday.
The attack is the second
confirmed dog attack in
Grand Saline in recent
months, Bradford repor-
ted. The first was con-
sidered minor, he said, as
the dog that did the at-
tacking did not break the
person’s skin. However,
citizens have complained
about packs of dogs
roaming some neigh-
borhoods in the city, and
money was included in the
city budget this year for a
tranquilizing gun and an
animal control cage.
The city does not have
an animal control officer,
Bradford noted. Police of-
ficers will respond to repor-
ts of attacks, but will not
be patrolling the streets
looking for stray dogs, he
said.
“If an owner (of a stray)
can be identified, then
there will be a citation
issued for allowing the dog
to run loose," he said.
Residents must pen the
animals themselves and
call police before a pickup
will be made, he said.
It will be some time,
however, before any dogs
can be taken. A cage must
be built on a trailer to
humane society specifica-
tions before any animals
can be captured for trans-
port to the county humane
society shelter just north of
Canton, Bradford said.
Dogs in the city are re-
quired to have collars with
tags showing that they have
been vaccinated against
rabies, he added.
The most unfortunate
thing about the dog attack
is that the family had just
moved into the city a week
earlier, he said. "It's not a
very good welcoming,” he
noted.
