Th*i * ware, at ill prutneting
tha moftt gcntla alopaa to tha
top of tha mountain, entrant'll-
mants—ditahea dug in front
and in back of tha church out
of the rock of the hillside and
mounded on one side, behind
which the valiant defenders of
the church-fort stood to fire
upon the charging enemy.
Looking down upon these, I
could almost hear the sound
of gunfire und the piercing
scream* of men as they
charged and the dash and clat-
ter of metal against metal as
man came against man in a
life-nnd-death contest. The gut-
teral shouts of the victors, the
diminishing moans of the dying,
the terror-stricken prayers, the
bravery and the cowardice of
the men who fought and died
here in this three-act drama of
death has long since faded into
the mists of history.
All that is left now is an oc-
casional blood-water cactus and
here and there a rugged bole
gouged into the solid rock of
the hillside, whete cannon balls
marked the graves of the brave
and the trapped. The only sound
now is the tuneless whistle of
a young boy as he weaves a
wicker basket to sell in the
market—where once the mar-
tial music of the drums beat
out the charge to “glory or
death.”
Hut above it all, lasting
through it all. and stand-
ing victorious, is the
church. I wonder if we mill
ever learn . . .
* * *
Put enough of this. As I have
warned you, I have the fastest
sermon in the west and I’ll
preach at the drop of a hat.
With the help of my com-
patriots. I made it hack down
those steps and out the door
into the car on shaky legs. With
the roar of an engine, we were
off again for further adven-
ture, for we still had much ex
citement ahead of us on this
day. And we were impatient to
be about it.
And so, until next week,
then when the piercing and cx-
cit;ng cry of Adventure brings
us together once again, 1 bid
you, adios.
