Judge can excuse you from
District Court duty and the
County Judge from County
Court duty.
Ratliff Clears Up Jury
the health condition of the
juror seeking release from jury
duty. Any person with the above
statutory exemptions may file a
sworn statement with the
Sheriff, the Tax Assessor-Col-
lector, or the District or County
Clerk, in which event, no card
for such person will be placed in
the jury wheel for the ensuing
year. Since it is becoming in-
creasingly difficult to obtain the
services of citizens for jury duty,
this is the reason the above
statement of the law is made to
you at this time. Perhaps many
citizens are not aware of these
rules. Your cooperation is
needed by the courts in order
that our judicial system may
continue to be successful. If you
are summoned as a juror, please
bear in mind that your Sheriff
does not have authority to
excuse you. Only the District
Economic conditions are not
an exemption from jury service
unless all parties to the lawsuit
agree that such person may be
excused for economic reasons.
This should be done only in
open court. Any person sum-
moned as a juror who is exempt
by law, may establish his
exemption without appearing in
person by filing a signed
statement of his exemption with
the Clerk of the Court before the
date upon which he is
summoned to appear. A juror
wishing to be excused for
reasons of health should furnish
a doctor’s statement certifying
William P. Ratliff, District
Judge, has asked the Tribune to
bring to its readers information
with reference to jury duty in
the. courts of Texas. What he
has said below applies to district
and county courts but not to
justice courts. The following is
Judge Ratliff’s statement.
All competent jurors are
liable to jury service except the
following persons:
(1) All persons over 65 years
of age;
(2) All women having legal
custody of a child under the age
of 10 years;
Any person who can claim one
of the above exemptions can
waive such exemption and serve
on a jury if called. In fact, there
is no reason to believe that
persons over 65 years of age
cannot make good jurors if he or
she is physically able to serve.
