It is refreshing in these' days,
of the summer solstice, reeking
and hot as they are with the
fumes which rise from "Prima-
and Conventions to turn
aside from the places, where the
obscene tumult of politics is rag-
ing all around and wander
through sequestered paths and
the shady groveswvhere the mus-
es dwell. Such a pleasure, the
writer enjoyed* in reading a little
book entitled “Nature and other
Poems."' by Frieuch Simpson of
Halletsville and printed for priv-
ate circulation among the auth-
or's friends. The book, small as
it is, treats of a large variety of
subjects, and evidences every-
where rare facility of poetic ex-
pression, deep thoughtfulness,
culture ,and an imagination of
no common order. Much of the
book is devoted to speculation
on’ * the origin and de&tiny of
The Halletsville Fire Depart-
ments’ grand Fourth of jujy
celebration will be a grand suc-
cess. The money so willingly sub-
scribed has been as cheerfully
paid over and preparations for
a big time are being pushed
merrily forward. Hatietsville is
justly famous for its successful
celebrations and each one sur-
passes all former efforts.
A special excursion train will
be run from Cuero and Yoakum,
which will arrive in Halletsville
at 9:30 a. m. ; Large delegations
] are expected from all nearby
cities and towns.
Two celebrated brass bands
will furnish music for the occa-
sion. There will be interesting
Firemen's Contests and an amus-
ing . Old Fiddlers Contest for
cash prizes. Mrs. *F. Sokol will
furiiish excellent meals on the
grounds. Following is the
prooram:
Grand parade of visiting and
home firemen, Citv Council, visit-
ing Societies and Trat^es displays
to form between depot and pub-
lic square and to ip arch under
leadership of Grand Marshal to
the Schuetzen Pavilion. Address
oh welcome by Chief of the Fire

men and visitors by Hon. R. B.

concert music bv first-class cor-
net bands. A clay pigeon shoot
will be arranged.

Home last Saturday and placed
him in jail. Lewis is a white
