work because the crabs didn’t

the winners were finally

Mrs. Dorothy Roberts won the

The highlight of Saturday
afternoons events was the
shrimp-eating contest. A large
crowd filled the stands at the
stadium and cheered their
favorite contestant.
Martin de Leon got off to a
quick start and in about 9
minutes ate his first pound of
shrimp. But after that he slowed
down and each pound got
harder to swallow. When he
started on his fourth one pound
sack, the crowd let out a cheer
and urged him on as he tried to
break the world's record of 3*2
pounds in 30 minutes. De Leon
fell short of the record but

SHRIMP - EATING CHAMPIONS
Martin de Leon was enthusiastically cheered on after he took the lead in Saturday
evenings shrimp-eating contest. De Leon (at right in the top photo) got off at a fast pace and
ate the first pound of shrimp in about nine minutes. He slowed down a bit on the second
pound and the third pound got a little harder to swallow and when the fourth pound of shrimp
was poured on de Leon’s plate tne crowd that filled the stands let out a cheer and started
urging him on. De Leon ate three pounds and 2'/2 ounces of the shrimp to win the 1976
shrimp-eating title but fell short of the world’s record of pounds. Second place in the
event went to Chris Jaynes (bottom right) who ate 2 pounds 9V« ounces of shrimp and third
place went to Danny Hale (bottom left) who ate 2 pounds 7V« ounces. In the picture with de
Leon is Felix Myers, another of the 15 contestants who tried to beat the world record.

Cont’d from P-1
ordinance recommended by the
Texas Municipal League. He
said it would assure that
persons who come into town and
want to establish burglar alarm
systems are investigated and
are reputable.
As explained to the council,
the ordinance authorizes the
city to charge for the use of the
police station as a location for
the system and give standards
for equipment to be used.
Robert Mize currently operates
a system out of the police
station.
Under the ordinance, the city
will be able to charge $5 a
month per position for anyone
who wishes to establish a
burglar alarm system head-
quartered at the police station.
Councilman Turnbough was
concerned that under the
ordinance Mize would have to
update his equipment to meet
the new standards, but was told
that the standards for equip-
ment did not apply to systems
already established but that he
would have to be licensed and
would have to pay the fee.
In another matter, the city
council approved payment of
$26,808.57 to Glaser Construc-
tion Company on the Commu-
nity Development Program
The council also approved a
request from Rollins Outdoor
Advertising for a space to erect
a billboard at Railroad and
Goodnight.
Cliff Kinkade, Wilson Weh-
ring, L.W. Jernigan were
appointed to the Tax Equaliza-
tion Board. Walter Cooper was
appointed as an alternate.

heading contest. Fourteen men
and women accepted the
challenge and tried to be the
first to finish heading ten
pounds of shrimp. Reggie
Wiggins was the successful
contestant and he went home
$70 richer.
Another large crowd gathered
around the crab racing ’’arena”
but the crabs were not very
cooperative and it took some
time before a winner could be
determined. Elton Ivicic had
the sometimes painful job of
marking the numbers on the
back of the wet and uncoopera-
tive crabs and he was aided by
Jim Bauknight.
After the first heat, it was
decided to just number all the
crabs and place them in the
center of the arena and
determine the winner that way,
