WALLS — Then the walls. Tiles
are, of course, excellent, but very
expensive. Oil paint is very good,
and washes easily. Then there is
sanitas paper, which can be used
if one likes a design on the walls.
I wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I appreciate
very much the fine patronage you have given me since I
opened for business and I will continue to give you the best
service possible and appreciate your trade.

FLOOR—One thing it must not be,
and that is porus. Composition fl'oor-
ings are fair, but linoleum is better.
Medium weight linoleum is excellent,
as it has a slight give which is a
great help in not tiring one so
much. Lay your linoleum carefully,
so that no water may enter the
cracks where it is put together.
Cement is a good thing to use to
prevent .this.
Needlecraft Club
Mrs. J. R. Barry was hostess to the
regular meeting of the Needlecraft
Club on Frioay afternoon at her
home on Missouri Avenue.
. The club meeting was turned into
a beautiful Christmas party with ul-
terior decorations symbolic of the
yuletide with Santa Claus and Christ-
mas bells.
A gaily decorated Christmas tree
stood in a corner of the room and as
each lady arrived with her gift they
were hung on the tree where they
were later distributed, Mrs. Barry
calling out the gifts. There were ex-
changes of many lovely gifts. Mrs.
Barry also presented her guests with
pretty 1924 calendars complimentary
of the Mercedes Creamery.
A most amusing and fun provok-
ing feature of the afternoon was the
“pig contest.” Each lady, blindfold-
ed, drew the likeness of a pig and
after much deliberation it was de-
cided to award the honors to Mrs. G.
C. Fittz, who received a lovely prize.
The consolation went to Mrs. R. B.
cCt len.
vesv to • in the afternoon a salad
curreni and plum pudding were
by the hostess who was as-
siaoeu. by Miss Irene Bolton to the
following ladies: Mesdames B. K.
Tenney, R. B. Hadden, C. W. Trott,
Amzi Stewart, A. W. Shouse, John P.
Sewell, M. G. Black, H. T. Stotler, J.
S. McNeil, Ned Irby, G. C. Fittz and
Mrs. Birthisel. The next meeting
will be held with Mrs. M. G. Black.

The surroundings were most at-
tractive with Christmas decorations.
The most delicious dinner preceed-
ed the games, the centerpiece being
a minature Christmas tree.
In the games that followed high
scores were made by Mrs. H. F. Ar-
dery and W. D. Holland. The per-
sonnel included Messrs, and Mes-
dames Harry Rouse, H. F. Ardery,
Ralph Buell, John Jones, Mrs. G. C.
Sorrick, and W. D. Holland and the
host and hostess.

A NEW YEAR
GREETING
Miss Nina W. West of Port Huron,
Mich., direct kin of Roger Conant,
first Governor of Massachusetts Col-
ony, has been voted a salary of
$20,000 per year as Supreme Com-
mander of the Women's Benefit As-
tociatiou.
May your New Year be merry—may
the gods of happiness and joy be ever
near you—may the remembrances
from others carry sentiments so pleas-
ing' as to warm your hearts—may good
cheer abound, and when the last spark
of the log of 1923 dies, may the new
log of 1924 bum steadily through the
year, with flames that glow with pros-
perity and health.
Here’s to the New Year—may it
hold for you prosperity tenfold; may it
make up to you in worldly goods and
health for all losses in the past; may
it keep you at the top of the wave, and
help us to merit your continued and
appreciated patronage.
so in planning a home let us start
with that. The first thing that
should be remembered is to have
the utensils together—together, but
in a place where they are to be
used. This will .save much running
around, loss of time and energy.
LIGHTING — Then consider the
light. A good light is essential. A
light that hangs from the middle
of the room is not good, because
one is usually directly in one’s own
shadow. For instance, if you put
something in the oven you are
standing with the light behind you.
Therefore the lights, if possible,
should be in the side walls. This
will light up your kitchen without
casting shadows.

Once I took a course known as
“House Management.” It was very
instructive, and I think it might
help some of my readers in prob-
lems encountered every day. The
teacher of our class was a middle-
aged woman with information that
had taken over twenty years of
actual experience to acquire. I was
extremely interested in the practical
experiences she was telling about. I
took notes, and from them I have
prepared the column below, which I
hope will interest you.
THE HIDALGO COUNTY

If you want an unusually handsome but very economical
roof, you’ll want Barrett Everlastic Octagonal Strip
Shingles. Their shape is novel—their rugged mineral sur-
face in rich red, cool green or blue-black is most attractive.
And they are inexpensive to apply because they are laid in
strips of four instead of singly.
Everlastic Octagonal Strip Shingles are extremely durable
and fire-resistant. Their price is moderate. There is no
maintenance cost to consider as they need no painting.
Let us estimate on that new roof.
