after as ”Su|H‘r Value Oay," in an effort
t<. induce tin' |M'o|>|e of Gladewater and
Nurroiimlinp area to do their shopping in
(iladewHter. The plan is being s|a»iis*»r**d
by the Ketail Aleivhaiita (’ommittee of the
Chamber of Commerce.
This idea is an extension of the drive
aponanmi by the Chamber of Commerce
in December to get people to "Shop m
Gladewater This Christmas," which was one
of the most successful promotional cam-
paigns ever carrii I out i»y that orjranixu-
lieji. As a result of the pre-Christ mas
drive, scores ot |.et»|tle :'hopped III Idude-
waler who formerly had gone to other
cities to do their buying, and., as n result,
total Christina1- all in tdadewaier reach-
ed a high total. ,M mix m>n liaiits. at that
time, felt that sit-It a campaign nvukl well
be carried on thi"uglio«it the year
The **Su|ier Values |>a.\ plan, however,
is ill no sense a relielition of the pl*e-
( hristmas merchandising drive. It has
been greatly expanded and elaborated.
The merchants are cooperating in such a
way as to present bargains that buyers
cannot well afford te. pass up, and il these
s|H*cial bargain days bring the |»’«»ple into
the local stores, the* will have accomplish
cd their purpose. Once the local people
realize what a wide variety id merchand-
ise the local stores have tr, offer, the* will
l»c slow to go to other cities to lo their
trading.
While it is true that (dadeuaier people
and those in surrounding areas owe a civ-
ic ;(iid serial obligation to • h« merchants
of Gladewater. who arc n ideal, lu re and
laxpayers. helping to build up *h“ com
tnunity, that fad alone is not . illlien nl t"
naivilice file people that they ought 1n
trade in t iladewatei. they must be shown
that they can obtain asV'**"l merchandise
m Gladewater as the* can elsewhere, and
at prices just as n .e onahb . W e lielieve
the campaign now being carried <>n by the
Chamber of Commerce will emit inn them
of that fact. If so. d will help everyone
_the customers as well a - tin* merchants.
Brotherhood Week
This week is being observed^ ihrough-
out the nation as Brotherhood Week. Tin
observance is sponsored by the National
Conference of Christians and Jews and is
designed to bring together men of givxlwill
of all faiths in defense of the ideals ii|miii
which this nation is founded.
Tile observance this year is particularly
timely, since the Judeo-Chriatian civiliza-
tion is being challenged abroad by the
forces ill' totalitarianism. The Tuden-Christ-
iuii ideal emphasizes the integrity of the
individaul and is the antithesis of the te.'al-
itttrian dens id* sulKir.iinatng the indivi-
dual to the control ol the state. The Ju-
deo-( hristian civilization upholds the rights
nf man and hidds to the ideul of the Broth-
crliiHid of Man under the FatherhiHid of
l«od. The Communiift dialetie advocates
a continuing class war, denies the existence
of God and scuffs at the idea of universal
brotherhood.
' The big i|U(*stion today," warns Form-
er Secretary of the Navy John I,. Sulli-
van, "is whether the human spirit will re-
main free or whether d is to be enslaved
by totalitarianism." And the decision is
largely up to the American iienple.
Protestants, < at holies and Jews cooper-
ated in founding this country and have
been active in maintaining il ever since.
The man who wrote the Iteclaration of lu-
dependence was a Protestant, Thomas Jef-
ferson, but one of its first signers was a
Catholic. Charles Carroll <u Carrollton:
while the man who loaned money to the
Continental Congress to finance the Revis-
it ion was a I'ewish broker in New York
whose name is not even recorded in most
histories. Members of the three faiths
have fought together in every war and
worked together in times of peace to build
lhe country.
Brotherhood Week "ill he observed in
Gladewater with a combined service club
luncheon at the < ommunity Building Thur •

speakers will give brief talks, and l>v |» •

go all out for the observance of Brother*

ani| le of democracy in action.
