Measure For Equal
Facilities In Parks
AUSTIN, Feb. 24 'UP*—A Tyler
lawmaker today awaited action on
two moves to assure white and Ne
gro citizens equal facilities in all
Texas State parks.
Sen. Warren McDonald yoster j
day introduced a bill which would
require equal, but aaparate, facil-
ities in parks for members of both
races.
Additionally, ne introduced n
resolution which would set up n
six-member legislative committee
to study the cost of offering “Sub-
stantially equal park facilities for
white and Negro races in the
state"
The committee would report its
findings to the next regular ses-
sion of the Legislature.
McDonald's proposal also would
empower the Parks Board with
authority to make rules and regu-
lations needed for "harmony,
peace, welfare, health and safety
of the state and community" in
the park system
It also would require closing of
any state park or facility of a
park ' where separate, equal facil-
ities for white and Nagro cannot
be furnished and to reopen them
when such facilities are available '
The Senate Committee on State
Affairs was studying both meas-
ures.
