DOinGS in DEIlTOn
IN MARCH, 1956
CREATING GOOD WILL
NO. I
In this initial issue of DOINGS
in DENTON magazine there is
presented to the people in Den-
ton a new and unique idea in a
publication. As is evidenced in
these pages, this new magazine is
the outgrowth of “THIS WEEK
in DENTON,” stressing good-will
as its theme, yet larger in size
and more general in content.
This is a magazine for YOU—
You will determine the extent of
its success. With each succeed-
ing issue we expect, with your co-
operation, to give more items of
interest about greater numbers of
our citizens.

name-and-address problems, but
no effort nor expense will be
spared in reaching this goal.
Please do not hesitate to write us
if your name or address is wrong.
The cost of maintaining an up-to-
date mailing list, the printing, and
postage required in mailing this
magazine to everyone in Denton
is enormous, and is accomplished
only through the cooperation of
our advertising sponsors and the
fact that this magazine is edited
on only an expense basis. Our pur-
pose is to promote good-will and
friendliness among Denton people
and former citizens of Denton,
most of whom have many ties in
Despite the many technical
problems involved in producing
the kind of magazine we vizualize, we can—and
will—give you a magazine Denton will be proud of,
with the continued moral and financial support of
our sponsors and advertisers.
DOINGS in DENTON will, through the combined
efforts of the editor and publisher, cover a much
larger field than the newsletter of the editor (start-
ed in 1937), his newspaper column, or his more re-
cent magazine “THIS WEEK.” Our efforts will be
directed to the finding of news of the doings of more
people—we hope all the people—in Denton.
This magazine is indeed fortunate to have as its
editor E. J. Headlee. Despite Mr. Headlee’s protest
(he said people much prefer to see the picture of a
pretty Denton girl) it was felt by the entire staff of
this publication that everyone should recognize the
man who has made this magazine possible, there-
fore we picture his likeliness on this page. Mr. Head-
lee is editor without a salary, and has only a very
modest expense account to defray the cost involved
in his work as editor.
When the problems of putting the name and ad-
dress of every family and business in the city of
Denton on addressing plates is worked out, we shall
(as nearly as possible) see that everyone in Den-
ton will have the opportunity to see and read this
magazine. We know we will have to iron out a lot of
our city and county.
The staff has not had time to contact many of
our best supporters; and we want to thank those
we have contacted for their spontaneous approval
and moral and financial support. Our representa-
tives have been told over and over again that Den-
ton needs the kind of magazine we plan to publish.
DOINGS in DENTON is in no sense experimental.
Enough of our sponsors and prospective advertisers
have assured us of their continued support to guar-
antee the kind of publication we all want; and we
request your suggestions, criticisms and coopera-
tion in the job to be done.
This issue is only the beginning. We plan improve-
ments which we have not had time to even fully
work out in detail.
Again, the entire staff emphasizes that this mag-
azine is fortunate to have as editor and associate
one who made an unquestionable success of the
smaller but popular “THIS WEEK,” who was mo-
tivated in making this change by desire to get away
from most of the details of publishing, so as to have
more time to write, and to find things and news to
write about. Mr. Headlee expressed himself in these
words:
“Writing is not a chore ... it is our life in this
year of our Lord, 1956.”
