Today in History
Today is Sunday, July 2, the 184th day of 2000. There are 182 days left
in the year.
Today's Highlight in Histoiy:
On July 2,1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution saying
that “these United Colonies are, and of right, ought to be, Free and Indepen-
dent States.”
On this date:
In 1881, President Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau at the Wash-
ington railroad station; Garfield died two months later.
In 1926, the United States Army Air Corps was created.
In 1937, aviator Amelia Eaihart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared
over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to, make the first rounckheworfd
flight at the equator. ,
In 1964, President Johnson signed into law a sweeping civil rights bill
passed by Congress.
In 1976, the Supreme Court ruled the death penalty was not inherently
cruel or unusual.

We should collectively tend to society’s landscapes
On my way to work I pass a house
with a disreputable looking yard. It is
strewn with the debris of many years
of neglect Rusted and forgotten toys
and tools, trash m piles and at ran-
dom. It must be a painful eyesore for
the adjacent strefch of neatly kept
lawns and houses.
Yesterday as I drove by, there was
a fellow in the yard, pushing a
decrepit lawn mower, cutting a swath
in the brown scrubby grass. Appar-
ently heedless of fee obstacles, he
was cutting around the rocks and lit-
ter.
I wondered: Did he think merely
cutting the wild growth of water-des-
perate grass would improve the curb
appeal of his otherwise presentable
house? What about the stack of man-
gled lawn chairs and decaying
garbage bags and heaps of rotting
newspapers? How about hauling

them off to really make a dent in the
sullied landscape?
Ah well. Not my business how
someone else tends his lawn. Not my
business that the extent of his spring
cleaning ended with sweeping the
grass clippings off his sidewalk.
But I thought, my own life needs
better tending, too.
Late at the office, talk turned to
children and guns and the just-
released statement of the Florida boy
who shot and killed a favorite
teacher. I thought again about the
gentleman with the short-sighted
vision of his yard and I wondered if
our national landscape was obscured
by the same lack of focus,
Are we too quick to blame shoot-
ing tragedies on access to guns?
Upon deeper consideration, it seems
too easy, too pat an explanation for
why children murder.
Maybe we should examine toe rest
of the picture for details we’ve over-
looked in our rush to rationalize the
senselessness.
Children do not suddenly become
murderers. They don’t finish their
Froot Loops and load their backpacks
with rifles and handguns en route to a
hard day in the school yard.
Clearly, something happened
along the path, but we missed the
signals. We ignored the obstacles
while we cut the grass.
4
Undoubtedly, our personal land-
scapes need more attention.
Maybe we should worry less aboutl
guns and more about communicating]
with our kids. Turn off the TV and
talk. And listen. And listen even
harder to what they don’t say.
1 regret the many times I’ve tuned
out my youngest as he yammered at
length about something that didn’t
interest me. I wonder what I missed.
And I wonder what real problems
I ’m overlooking as I tend to his easi-
er-to-fix, obvious needs.
I reckon it’s incumbent on all of us
—parents, teachers, neighbors—to
collectively tend our landscapes and
keep watch for the obstacles that
obscure our understanding.
