Smoking still optional, but
courtesy should be mandatoiy
■■F he compromise reached on Baytown’s smoking control ordi-
I nance is not perfect. Very little is in this life. However, the
■ city council did allow employees in restaurants and other
businesses to have the option of working in smoking or non-smok-
ingsections of those establishments.
Owners of those businesses, especially restaurants, should take
advantage of the council’s willingness to compromise and not take
advantage of employees whose health hangs in the balance.
We’ve said it before: no one should be forced to breathe the nox-
ious fumes from burning cigarettes, but the choice of whether to be
exposed to second-hand smoke is as fundamental as business own-
ers’ right to allow or not allow the habit in their doors.
So, Baytonians, smoking is still legal in Baytown. But remember,
common courtesy goes a long way to preserving the option, not the
right, to smoke in public.

Learning more about buying gifts
This past Valentine’s Day, I thought I
would get real tricky and get my wife
something that would really be differ-
ent.
After all, I had done been down that
road of Valentine cards with those mes-
sages that some guy in Kansas City
dreams up. They say that the Valentine
box shaped like a heart, filled with 10
bucks worth of candy, will satrisfy the
desires of a loved one.
This year was going to be different,
and I knew just what to buy to rank me
about a 7.5 on the Richter scale.
I bought a pair of peach-faced love
birds.
I went all out — cage, feeders, a
trapeze and little bells with tiny mirrors
made on the sides.
My wife was thrilled with her unusu-
al Valentine present, and my friends
pictured me as the man on the white
horse.
After a while, we all got to wonder-
ing if both those love birds were he’s
instead of he and she. They slept side
- n |, |
by side at night, but more like brothers
than lovers.
The only way I’ve ever known how to
tell birds’ sex is by just keeping a close
eye^ajpd seeing if nature takes its
course.
Things started going downhill for me
after a couple of weeks.
My wife lost interest in my wonder-
ful gift, and I found myself tending to
those love birds full time.
I hate to admit it, but I almost ended
I have now bought a nesting box and
attached it to the outside of the cage.
The thing is about 10 inches high and
six inches deep. I had to cut a hole in
the cage with some wire snippers so
the little lovers could have access to the
bridal suite.
Every mor|iing while I sip my Fol-
gers, I stare out the patio window at
those birds in the cage.
Of course, they go out on the patio
after I’ve fed and watered and hung
them up on the chain.
I’m going to promise my wife one
thing right now. If they have baby birds
hatching pretty soon, I’m the one who
is going to be in charge of the baby
bird shower.
The moral of this tale is this: When
buying a woman a present, make sure
it’s something that doesn’t eat and
drink.
up buying myself a pair of love birds
that didn’t want to fall in love.
Wait a minute now, that’s not all.
