Instructors to
attend seminar
Sunday. March 3.1996
Thirty educators from across
Texas will be selected to attend a
one-week traveling study semi-
nar this summer that will focus
on Germans who settled the
Texas Hill Country.
The seminar is for elementary
and secondary school teachers,
community college instructors,
museum educators, archivists
and anyone else seeking a deeper
understanding of German influ-
ence in Texas.
Sponsored by the Texas State
Historical Association, the Cen-
ter for Studies in Texas History
and the College of Liberal Arts
at the University of Texas-
Austin, as well as the Lee Col-
lege Continuing Education Divi-
sion, the seminar will assist
teachers and school districts in
complying with essential ele-
ments mandated by the state of
Texas for education in grades 2,
3, 4 and 7, as well as the
advanced Texas studies course at
the high school level.
The seminar, set for June 3-7,
will begin and end in Houston.
Participants must make their own
travel arrangements to and from
Houston.
John C. Britt, American Stud-
ies instructor and Honors Pro-
gram coordinator at Lee College
and Jo Ann Stiles, professor of
Texas History at Lamar Universi-
ty, will lecture at each site visit-
ed.
Former Baytonian fares
well in competition
Enjoying the scenery in the conservatory in the Opryland Hotel is for-
mer Baytown resident Melissa McConnell who was the second run-
ner-up in the National Teenager Scholarship Program.

of Ruston, La., placed in the top
three contestants at America's
National Teenager Scholarship
Program held at the Roy Acuff
Theater at Opryland in Nashville,
Tenn.
All 50 states and Puerto Rico
had representatives competing for
the title. McConnell is the reigning
Miss Teen Louisiana. Contestants
competed in talent or essay,
evening gown, community ser-
vice, interview, on stage interview
question, scholastic grade point
averages, hospitality and conge-
niality. Cash awards, scholarships
and endorsements were awarded
to the top five in the contest.
McConnell won second runner
up to the national title, and $2,000
in cash scholarships. She also was
honored by the other contestants
when they voted her Miss Conge-
niality. McConnell* essay on "My
Volunteer Community Service"
received an honorable mention
award from the judges.
During the week, more than 200
messages arrived for McConnell
from friends and family through-
out the South, many from the Bay-
town area.
McConnell, a freshman at Texas
A&M University, has won numer-
ous awards for volunteer commu-
nity service. She has served on the
Board of Directors for the North
Central Louisiana Habitat for
Humanity and has helped con-
struct five Habitat homes.
