Gillespie County Hay Show Last Month Was A "First Ever"
SUBSCRIBE
TO THE HERALD
$3.15, incl. tax, per year locally;
$5.25, incl. tax, outside area.
By Duery Menzies
County Agent
Gillespie County held its first
Hay Show, Friday, August 20.
There were 64 entries in this
“FIRST EVER” event. All
samples were on display at the
Gillespie County Fair for the
general public to see.
This show was very educa-
tional as there were some ex-
treme differences in the quality
of the hay exhibited. The hay
was judged by A1 Novosad,
State Extension agronomist,
Dr. Willis Gass, Area Exten-
sion agronomist. These men
judged the hay exhibits based
on chemical score and physical
score. Chemical score is based
on crude protein of the sample.
Ideal protein standards have
been established for all classes
of hay. These standards are
considered economically at-
tainable by producers in terms
of fertility necessary and
maturity at harvest. For ex-
ample, the Standard for Alfalfa
is 20 percent crude protein,
sudan, cane, hegari 11 percent;
Kleingrass, Bermuda and
Small Grain 12 percent.
Samples with the standard pro-
tein or above receives 100 per-
cent or 100 points. Crude Pro-
tein below the standard re-
ceives that percentage of points
it has compared to the ideal.
Physical Score is based on
those characteristics we can
see and determine with our
eye. These characteristics
include: maturity, texture,
leafiness, foreign material and
color. Physical score perfect is
also 100 points.
Chemical score and physical
score are added together,
divided by 2 for a numerical
score for every sample. Rib-
bons are given on basis of
points awarded per sample.
Thus each sample is judged on
its own merits and not against
each other. 85 to 100 points
mean a blue ribbon sample; 70-
84 points indicate a red ribbon
sample. Below 70 points a white
ribbon sample.
More important than what
ribbon everyone received is the
knowledge each exhibitor re-
ceived about his hay crop. Now,
he can figure how much protein
supplement he must furnish his
livestock over and above his
hay.
Winners in each category
were: alfalfa - Kermit Cren-
welge, Fredericksburg; sudan-
Jim McMahon, Harper; klein-
grass - LeeRoy Behrends,
Stonewall; hegari - Oswald
Burrow, Fredericksburg; cane
- Jim Faught, Doss; bermuda -
Norman Wilke, Fredericks-
burg.
Grand Champion Hay was
the Coastal Bermuda sample of
Norman Wilke. It had a crude
protein of 15.9; digestible pro-
tein 12.7. Reserve Grand
Champion Hay was Sudan - Hy-
brids exhibited by Jim Mc-
Mahon. This sample had crude
protein of 13.5 with digestible
protein 10.4.
The Fredericksburg Young
Farmers sponsored the Hay
Show. Chairman Edward
Meier, committee members,
Larry Burrow, Buddy Spaeth,
Dan Wade Crenwelge, Gary
Lynn Hahn, Christian Beh-
rends, Kenneth Lindig all
worked very hard to make the
Hay Show quite a success. In
addition to collecting hay
samples the committee secured
donors for trophies for the win-
ning entries. Supporting this
educational- event were Allied
Agricultural Services; Meier
Equipment Company; Lochte
Storage and Commission Com-
pany; Farmers Grain Com-
pany; Arno Behrends; Hill
Country Implement; Woerner
Warehouse; Fredericksburg
Young Farmers and Armke
Awards.

NUMBER ONE
ON THE BALLOT
(S.J.R. 49)
Repealing Sections 49-d
and 49-d-l of Article III
of the Texas Constitution,
S.J.R. 49 amends Section
49-c of Article III of the
Texas Constitution to pro-
vide for and authorize an
a4ditional $400 million in
Texas water development
bonds that may be issued
on approval of two-thirds
of the members of each
house of the Legislature
for such water develop-
ment purposes as the
Legislature may prescribe.
The amendment con-
tains a specific prohibition
against the use of state
funds for the development
of water resources from the
Mississippi River and also
requires that before any
single water development
project may be undertaken
requiring the expenditure
of more than $35 million
in bond proceeds, it must
be approved by resolution
of the Legislature.
The amendment re-
moves the constitutional
requirement that certain
revenues must be used to
retire water development
and water quality enhance-
ment bonds and removes
the constitutional interest
rate limit on such bonds.
The wording of the pro-
posed amendment as it will
appear on the ballot is as
follows:
“The constitutional
amendment authorizing
an increase of $400 mil-
lion in the amount of
Texas Water Develop-
ment Bonds that may be
issued on approval of
two-thirds of the legis-
lature; amending and
consolidating provisions
of Sections 49-c, 49-d
and 49-d-l of Article III
of the Texas Constitu-
tion; and repealing Sec-
tions 49-d and 49-d-l of
Article III of the Texas
Constitution.”

ciple amount of Texas
water development bonds
which may be issued and
outstanding by the Texas
Water Development Board
to provide grants and loans
for water quality enhance-
ment purposes as estab-
lished by the Legislature.
The wording of the pro-
posed amendment as it will
appear on the ballot is as
follows:
“A constitutional amend-
ment to increase from
$100 million to $200
million the amount of

ment Bonds that may be
issued for water quality
enhancement purposes.”
