CROSS COUNTRY
Harper runners did not
collect any medals dur-
ing their third cross
country competition of
the season, but display-
ed a nice competitive
spirit at the state’s
largest cross country
invitational Saturday,
September 26 when the
University of Texas at
San Antonio hosted the
UTSA/Whataburger Cross
Country Invitational.
Running against varsity
competition for the
first time, Longhorn
freshman Roque Quezada
was 14th among 216 racers
in the boys' small school
division which included
Sammy Umberhagen of
Little River-Academy.
Umberhagen is the de-
fending 2A State cross
country champ and won
gold medals in the 1600
and 3200 at last spring's
state track and field
meet. Quezada'a time
was 17;41 for the course.
Harper's other run-
ners included David
Holmes, Ben Fox, Adam
Ward, Jason Adams and
Bock Palmer, who gave
HHS it's first ever
team finish in cross
country competition.
Harper finished 25th
among the top 25 teams
in the 40-school cate-
gory.
LadyHorn freshman CArol
Leinweber also showed
up well in the small
school girls' division
where she ran 23rd
among 230 athletes.
Leinweber's time was
15:15 for two miles on
a course that became
very narrow and diffi-
cult to pass on at
times, according to
head coach Billy Na-
bours. Nicole Harper
was Harper's only other
runner in the division
and completed the
course despite an in-
jury suffered during
compeition.
Harper runners will
compete in the Tivy
Invitational to be
held Saturday, October
3rd at the Schreiner
College campus.
FOOTBALL
The beginning of Dis-
trict 28-A football
action brought sad re-
sults for the Harper
Longhorns - a loss -
as the 'Horns dropped
a tough 14-8 decision
to the Nueces Canyon
Panthers Friday,
September 25 at Long-
horn Field.
The Panthers scored
in the first quarter
when quarterback Brian
Borchardt ran 22 yards
to the end zone. Har-
per's Tom Bode blocked
the extra point kick,
however, and when
fullback David Holmes
went over from the
one in the second
quarter Harper tied
the game at 6-6. On
the extra point, Har-
per's holder, tailback
Justin ESquell faked
instead and ran un-
touched to collect
the two-point conver-
sion. Esquell's con-
verson gave Harper
it's first halftime
lead of the season,
8-6 at the break.
The Longhorns failed
to sustain their momen-
tum offensively, how-
ever, as evidenced by
no first downs in the
second half and only
four for the entire
game. Nueces Canyon
meanwhile picked up
its winning score with
6:42 in the third quar-
ter when Borchardt
again did the heroics
with a 31-yard run
through the heart of
the Longhorn's de-
fense. Borchardt's
two-point conversion
pass was deflected by
Esquell, but fell into
the waiting arms of
Frank Karnes for the
capper.
Karnes ended up as the
game's leading rusher
with 64 yards on six
.carries while Esauell
paced the Longhorns
with 49 yards. Ste-
wart Cooke and Andrew
Bishop had fumble re-
coveries for the
'Horns and Cooke also
made 23 tackles of
Nueces Canyon ball car-
riers. Bishop and
Jarin ARhelger made
17 tackles while 110-
pounder Holmes came
up fron safety to
get in on 15
stops,
including a
pair of
unassisted tackles.

straight hone games -
