Uano Fine Arts Guild names
Ewing, Artist of the Month
• By Dr. H.K. HicktHaviru
Sylvia Ewing is Artist of the
Month. Doc—her. at the Llano
fine Arts Gallery, 305 Bessemer
St. Llano, IX One of our long-
est practicing artist Ewing has
been an active member of the Ll-
ano Fine Arts Ouild for twenty
years. She has given many dem-
onstrations in watercolor and
mixed media for the gallery and
other art organizations.
Ewing began her art career al-
most by accident. She was
“drafted" into attending her first
art class because she worked for
the teacher who’s class needed
one more student to “make.”
Sylvia drove 45 miles on her day
off to be in that class. Soon, how-
ever, she was hooked on art. She
began painting on wood panels
her husband, Don Ewing, matfe
In 1978 she began painting in
oil on canvas, wood and glass.
Ewing moved to Llano in the
fall of 1979 because it was the
most beautiful of all the places
the and Don had ever seen. Once
here, she was invited to come to
the gallery for an oil painting
class'with CKar Eppwright Later
she studied oils and watercolor
with Lillian Rnvter, charier mem-
ber of LFAG. She said. "I have
had many fine teachers in several
mediums and have learned much.
I have learned that I still have
much knowledge to gain. Over
the years I have become a water-
color artist It is a medium which
is always challenging, ever
changing.”
She added, “I also have learned
to use clay and enjoy doing
“Raku,” a special and unique way
of firing the clay. The finished
works are so exciting, each fir-
ing is different from the last al-
ways a surprise. I have learned
to do ‘ fused” glass, using stained
glass, layering it into a glass col-
lage. My husband Don and I work
on the glass together. I also make
ceramic pieces, vases with “lace,”
impressions and ceramic crosses,
for jewelry.”
Ewing participates in the
LFAO’s Spring and Fall Shows.
She has given several demonstra-
tion in watercolor and mixed
madia for the gallery and other
organizations.
She is a member of the Mid-
West Texas Artist’s Guild of
Ballinger and of the Waterloo
Watercolor Group of Austin, TX
Her paintings are in collections
as far away as New York. New
Jersey, Washington, and as close
as Arkansas, Oklahoma and of
course, Texas. Most recent shows
and awards have been: Spring
Arts & Music Festival Competi-
tion; Highland Lakes Arts Coun-
cil; Waterloo Watercolor Group;
Mid-West Texas Artist's Guild,
Fall Show and Coleman Artist’s
Fiesta, Fall Show , all this year
2001.
The Guild invites you to come
see her special exhibit running
through December. Ewing will be
teaching a water color class be-
ginning in February 2002. The
class will fill up fast.
The latest class she held at the
Gallery was three years ago. It
was attended by both practiced
watercolorists and novices. This
reporter was one of her students.
It was a real pleasure-to see such
a totally creative, inventive, art-
ist at work, Ewing’s own excite-
ment and awe over the 'natural
movement of the watercolor me-
dia was fun and contagious. She
is in fact an extremely facilitat-
ing teacher.
