The Llano Newt
Opinion
—
Scatterthought
b> John HalUmell
I had a great vacation,
exploring Arkansas and
hiking through the Ozarks
last week, but I'm back and
getting ready for a big
weekend here in Llano Last
> ear. 1 humed back and forth
between Kingsland and
Llano, taking about 2.000
pictures mi one day I have a
copy of that week's paper
(autographed by Senator
John Comvn. who rode in the
Aqua Boom parade, and was
pictured on the front page)
among m> "treasures" at
home. I don't think I have
enough energy (or enough
sunscreen) to match it this
\car. but I'll give it m\ best
shot
One thing I've already
decided is that I'm going to
spend the evening at the
Dabbs Hotel, where Phyllis
Alexander has promised a
great meal, live music and
the perfect vantage point (in
the beautifully landscaped
back yard overlooking the
nver) for watching Llano's
spectacular fireworks
display The "suggested
donation" is $22. but
proceeds go to support the
Fuel Coffee House, so it's a
very worthwhile investment
Sign up at Fuel if you d like
to attend, it should be a
wonderful evening1
Wherever I go. 1 read the
papers (even on vacation'),
so when I arrived at Fort
Smith. Arkansas last Friday.
I picked up copies of two
area newspapers Both
contained a story about the

problems they arc having
there with the new FEMA
floodplain maps It max be
worse there than here.
Senator Mark Pryor of
Arkansas, along with Senator
Thad Cochran of
Mississippi, has introduced
legislation in the United
States Senate to make FEMA
delay the plan “that’s
expected to force thousands
of Arkansans to buy flood
insurance " The article goes
on to say that "critics say the
updated maps are flawed and
create a conflict of interest
for FEMA. which is selling
the insurance it is requinng
people to buy " My thoughts
exactly! I'm glad to see it
isn't just Llano County that
is feeling mistreated It has
seemed obv ious to me from
the beginning that the
accuracy of the maps is not a
priority. FEMA is using this
mandate for updated maps as
a tool to generate a lot of new
revenue
So I really hate to give
FEMA any satisfaction at all.
but I think the county
commissioners were
probably wise to go ahead
w ith a plan to go ahead and
survey cross-sections of the
Llano River and coordinate
them with known high-water
marks from the floods of
I *>35 and 1907 That should
provide for a much more
accurate floodplain map. as
long as FEMA doesn't insist
that that the ”1 00-year flood'
they are planning for w ill be
higher than the IM35 flood
That "perfect storm" was by
far the highest flood Llano
County has had in at least
154 years, they shouldn't call
it an KO-year flood ”
I have just recently
learned of two new
businesses in Llano The
Flunsh Boutique is a
children's shop at 7|9 Ford
Street (a few doors down
from Stonewalls), and the
Rancher's Choice
Steak house will be opening
soon at XOM Berry Street, on
the west side of the square I
welcome both of them, and
wish them great success
I was absolutely delighted
to see the huge crowd at the
Lone Grove Fish fry last

that with a successful

the testimonies and music of
the International Street
Church choir (from Dallas)
at the Fuel Coffee House
were a thrill to hear On
Sunday afternoon. I attended
the unveiling of Robin
Chicsa's amazing Trail of the
Deer on east Main Street, and
stuck around for Fuel 's "Free
Burgers " Both were very
positive events, if you missed
the Trail of the Deer, you can
sec individual deer at
locations around town I
think that all the deer w ill be
on display at Badu Park for
the Rock'n Riverfcst July .3.
I want to remind all pet
owners that we re holding a
"patriotic pet parade" dunng
the Rock'n Riverfcst. at 2

and bring them to the shady
spot in the middle of the
