Police Report
Laverne & Shirley
Behind Bars
Laverne and Shirley are be-
ing held at the local Mathis
Police Station for 10 days.
Although they are not being
fed “hot bologna and gravy”,
as Tom T. Hall claimed in his
famous song, they have “bitten
the hand that fed them. ’’
No, television’s Laverne and
Shirley have not really gone
crackers in Mathis, but two pet
gerbils are being held for
observation, after taking an ex-
tra bite out of their owner’s
hand.
Gail Morris, Official Gerbil
Caretaker, said they are well
and don’t eat much, but her
desk is a little messy.

week, an unknown assailant

The program will run from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Registration will begin on Tuesday, June 10 at 1
p.m. at the high school gym.
around 1 a.m. Monday, June 2.

released at Riverside Hospital.

Register June 5
Summer School Begins
Parents and students are
reminded that registration for
Summer School is set for
Thursday, June 5, for the six
week session. Summer School
is primarily designed for
students who have been
retained in grades 4 through 8
and students at the high school
level who have failed a
freshman or sophomore course
in Mathis or English.
Students who barely passed,
or failed only one subject, may
attend summer school on a
space available basis and with
approval of the principal.
Students will register for
summer school on June 5.
Grades 4, 5 and 6 will report to
room one in the Intermediate
Annex, Junior High will report
to rooms 3 and 4 in the
Intermediate Annex and High
School will report to rooms 25
and 28 at the high school.
The summer school schedule
is from 8:00 - 12:00 a.m., June
5, through July 18. July 3 and 4
will be school holidays.
The morning session will be
divided into two periods. Each
session will be for two hours
and will enable a student to
take one or two courses
depending upon his individual
needs.
Mathis Independent School
District is returning to the
semester system next school
year, therefore attending
summer school could prevent
having to attend another year
on the high school level.
At the elementary and junior
high level the student would
have an opportunity to pass the
failed work and therefore
would not have to repeat the
next year at the same grade
level.
In order to remain in the
summer school program,
students are expected to have
good attendance, work habits
and behavior. Due to the fact
that this is a special program,
any student who does not fulfill
these requirements will be
dropped from the program.
Parents who are interested
in the summer program for
their children should contact
the school principal concerning
their child enrolling in the
program.

In Area
Lack Of Local Races Points To
Low Voter Turnout Saturday
With only one contest draw-
ing much attention area-wide,
a light turnout is being
predicted for Saturday’s run-
off election
The race for the 14th District
seat in Congress, between Bill
Patman of Ganado, and Bob
Barnes, Corpus Christi, has
been receiving the most atten-
tion, and has turned into a
heated campaign.
While some other judicial
races will be on thd Democratic
ballot, little interest has been
evidenced locally, and area
votes will be concentrating on
the Patman-Barnes contest,

and even more so on precinct
races for constable in the Sin-
ton and Taft areas.
In precinct 1 (Sinton) voters
will select a constable to
replace Pete Anzaldua, who
was an unsuccessful candidate
for County Sheriff in the May
primary. Larry Murphy,
former Sinton city policeman
and sheriff’s deputy, was the
top vote getter in the first
primary, with 995 votes, and
will face Gonzalo Gonzales in
the run-off. Gonzales, also a
former Sinton policeman, poll-
ed 631 votes in the May voting,
but the race was thrown into a
runoff by the third candidate,
Joe Lara’s 558 vote total.
The constable’s race in
Precinct 1 is drawing most at-
tention in that voting area, tak-
ing precedence even over the
congressional race.
Voters in Precinct 2, Odem,
will focus their attention on the
Congressional and statewide
elections, since there are no
contested races on the local
level. A similar situation
prevails in Precinct 3.
However, in Constable
Precinct 8, Taft, a race
between incumbent Leopoldo
Ramirez and Richard Ford has
drawn considerable interest,
and will be the main drawing
card for getting voters to the
polls.
Voters will mark their ballots
at their normal voting places,
same as in the May electin. All
regular voting will be by
machines, and the polls will be
open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Absentee voting, which end-
ed Tuesday, was comparative-
ly light, with 115 persons voting
at the county clerk’s office. An
additional 110 votes were
received by mail, through
Wednesday morning, and it is
expected there will be more
votes coming by mail. A total of
402 mail ballots were sent, and
mail votes postmarked before
midnight June 3 will be counted
as late as Saturday (election
day) morning.
