Cemetery Gets New Sign Millers Luau
Mrs. Stephen A. (Juaniece Lynn) Miller
Watkins-Miller Wed
Juaniece Lynn Watkins and
Stephen A. Miller were
married recently at the First
Presbyterian Church in
Rockport. Reverend William
Watkins, uncle of the bride,
officiated in the double ring
ceremony.
Juaniece Lynn is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Watkins of Rockport.
Stephen is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Alton' Miller of. Sleepy
Hollow.
They will make their home in
Rockport following a short
honeymoon trip.
Juaniece Lynn is a student at
Del Mar College majoring in
Biology and Stephen is
employed with the Texas State
Dept, of Public Safety in
Rockport.
A reception followed the
wedding ceremony at the Sand
Dollar Restaurant.
Lee and Jeanna Kay White of
Lone Grove, Oklahoma and
their children, Karen Naylor
and Mike Naylor Jr., visited in
the home of Jenna Kay’s
parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. T.
“Rip” Stovall and their
granddaughter, May Naylor
from Wednesday night to
Sunday evening recently.
Much fun and laughter was
shared as they cooked, ate and
just talked and visited
together.

Mrs. Maggie Mae Hodges
and her sister, Mrs. Ruth
Lapham were taken on a
shopping trip to the city by
Maggie Mae’s daughter-in-law,
Elizabeth Ann Hodges, of
Waco, recently and they all
enjoyed the trip very much. To
top off a perfect day, the three
dined at fabulous Luby’s. Sam
Hodges, oldest son, stayed with
A. G. “Pet” Hodges while the
three were out and it is much
appreciated by all.

Mr. and Mrs. Murl Williford
were evening guests in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe
Lamb Tuesday night. It was an
evening of good fellowship.

Oscar Aguilar Jr., recently
returned from three weeks
work in Hondurous. The whole
Aguilar family welcomed him
back, quite happy on his
return.

Mr. and Mrs. Doug Sandford
were Sunday evening guests in
the home of Mrs. Irene Lafield.
Pleasant talk and pleasant
company made for a very nice
evening.

Lee Crisp and Mrs. Irene
Lafield went to Beeville
Thursday to visit with Lee’s
wife, Mrs. Jeannie Bell Crisp.
She is a resident of the Hillside
Lodge and was very pleased
with the visit.

Rosie and Steve Skoruppa,
sister and brother-in-law of
Mrs. Mary Reed were recent
visitors in her home. All
enjoyed the visiting very
much.

Mrs. Mary Reed was finally
able to see her great-grandson,
born to Mr. and Mrs. Clayton
Bradfute, recently. They were
weekend visitors with her
mother, Mrs. Marjorie
Bradfute of Mathis and Mrs.
Reed joined in to view a perfect
great-grandson. He weighed
only 5 pounds at birth, but is
doing beautifully and gaining
weight rapidly.

Mr. and Mrs. Murl Williford
held a fish fry at their home
Thursday night. Guests for the
occasion were Mr. and Mrs.
Roscoe Lamb and Mr. and
Mrs. L. T. “Rip” Stovall. The
food was delicious and the
fellowship was fantastic.

children, Linda and John John,
arrived Saturday to spend time
in the home of his parents, Ted
and Jewel Elliott.

The Tom Mathis Cemetery
Committee replaced the old
sign at the cemetery Tuesday,
May 27. Committeemen Paul
Mahoney, W. O. Sweasey and
Ray Highsmith appreciate the
efforts of many in
accomplishing a job well done.
Sid Pollock, contract oil
gauger, donated the pipe and
delivered it to Mathis High
School. He was assisted by Ray
Highsmith.
Lonnie Messer, vocational
agriculture teacher and his
students, Brad Hennig, Ricky
Molina, Donald Hooper, David
Lytle and Jim McElhaney
welded the sign, painted it and
helped put it up.
Mathis Machinery donated
KINDERGRAD
A kindergarten graduation par-
ty, honoring Guadalupe Leal
Jr., was given by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe Leal
Sr. A barbecue dinner with all
the trimmings was enjoyed by
guests. Games were played and
prizes were awarded to the win-

Lakeshore Homemakers Meet
The Lakeshore Gardens
Extension Homemakers Club
made a trip to Rockport and
Port Aransas recently on their
regular monthly meeting day.
Twelve members were in the
group.
In Rockport, several art
Galleries were visited and
many works of art were seen.
The majority of the paintings
are of the sea, sand dunes and
sea birds. The shell craft was
also very interesting.
The highlight of the trip was
a visit to the Simon Michael
Gallery of Fine Arts. Here, Mr.
Michael’s paintings were
shown by one of his students,
who explained where each
painting was done; also the
subject of the painting.
A short business meeting
was held after lunch. Kay
Metcalf, President, reported
she had turned in 363 soup
labels to the Weber
Elementary School. These
labels help to obtain equipment
for the Handicapped children.
Lillie Klaus, council delegate,
gave a report on the County
Council meeting which was in
Sinton on May 12.
The club members were
pleased to hear that Kay had
been elected as a State
T.E.H.A. delegate to the
meeting which will be held in
San Antonio in October. There
was also a report that nine
members of Lakeshore
Gardens Club attended the
Olivarez Joins Team
Juan Olivarez of Mathis has
been appointed to the
Invincible Team of the Baptist
General Convention of Texas.
Olivarez is the son of Juan
and Delia Olivarez of 722 N.
Atascosa. He is a member of
the Primera Iglesia Bautista of
Mathis and is a management
major at Texas A&I University
in Kingsville.
The 1980 Invincible Team is
composed of 22 college and
university students who serve
as summer Sunday School
missionaries with Baptist
churches and associations.
Benoit cut the plates for the
lettering of the sign.
Bill Boultinghouse of San
Patricio donated his time and
equipment necessary to dig the
holes in rock caliche.
County Commissioner Glenn
Dorris and his men, Jessie
Moreno and Manuel, helped to
erect the sign and oilman
Corrie Nelson furnished the
paint.
County Commissioner’s
luncheon which followed the
Council meeting.
From Rockport, the club
went to Port Aransas and made
a tour through the University,
of Texas Marine Lab.
From there, the group
returned home and all agreed
it had been a most enjoyable
day.
The June meeting will be
held in the home of Mrs. Grace
Morris on June 20th.
The Tom Mathis Cemetery replaced the old sign with the help
of many community volunteers.The sign had to be
transported on a flatbed truck from the High School Ag shop
where it was welded.

wore colorful muu muus. One
lady was attired in a
magnificent grass skirt.
The menu consisted of
barbecue beef, Hawaiian-style
chicken and red beans cooke
Texas-Hawaiian style,
watermelon fruit bowl was aisc
served accented with fresh
mint. Each lady present als£,
brought a covered dish to
enhance the mood.
A beautiful full-color horse
shoe cake was served with the
inscriptions “Good Luck Melba
and Martin”.
Out of town members of the
Mathis Chapter of the Eastern
Star and guests were from
Sandia, Kerrville, San
Patricio, Robstown, Violet
