Question: When you are making
a turn at an intersection, do ped-
estrians on the second crosswalk
have the right-of-way over your
vehicle?
Answer: Yes. At an intersection
where there is no signal light, ped-
estrians in any cross walk have
the right-of-way over vehicles, ev-
en if the vehicles have to stop.

clinics, are now cared for by pri-
vate physicians. There was g,
time when physicians, generally,
were very reluctant to make veii-
ex-eal disease patients available fon..
contact investigation.
Today, however, more and more
private physicians, realizing that
these investigations are strictly
confidential and conducted by high-
ly trained public health personnel,
are making their patients availaj^e
for the necessary contact investi-
gations.
Upon request, the state Division
of Venereal Disease Control offers
medical, nursing, interviewing-in-
vestigating and other consultant-
services to the local level. During
the past two years, these services
have been in constant demand
throughout the state.
This past summer, the Division
of Laboratories and the Division
of Venereal Disease Control in the
State Health Department cooper-
ated with the United States Public
Health Service, Washington, D. C.,
in performing a “pilot study” and
a treatment “follow-up” of the
blood serologies of Mexican bra-
ceros entering the El Paso faci-
lity.
This study included over 50,000
blood tests, and .of these over seven
percent showed positive reactions.
An endeavor was made to treat
all of the positive reactors re-
maining in Texas.
Venereal disease control, like
other programs of the State Health.
Department, belongs to the people,
and eradication will become a rea-
lity when all Texans cooperate
fully in making it so.
25 minutes.
If preferred; cocoa may be sub-
stituted for chocolate. Sift 2-3 cups
cocoa with dry ingredients. If but-
ter, margarine or lard is used
father than shortening, use only
one cup of milk plus two table-
spoons.
For the fudge frosting, you will
need:
2 cups sugar
3-4 cups milk
2 tablespoons corn syrup
2 ounces chocolate
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cook the sugar, milk, chocolate
and syrup until it forms a soft
ball when dropped in cold water.
Remove from heat, add vanilla
and butter.
. Let the mixture cool to luke-
warm. Beat until creamy and thick
enough to spread. This will tr£e
from three to five minutes with
an electric mixer.
We’ll take a guess that there’s
still a name on your Christmas
shopping list with a question mark
after it.
Maybe he’s the young bachelor
who lives in the garage apartment
out back, or maybe it’s Grand-
father, who’s more than a little
discerning about what he eats and
wears.
Even the most discerning tastes
gratified with a freshly baked
fudge-nut cake, topped with a thick
rich fudge frosting.
The cake is a favorite in the
Robert Wehmeyer family. Wrapped
in sparkly clear cellophane and
cheery tinsel, the sweet is sure
to please, says Mrs. Wehmeyer,
whojbakes it often for her husband
and two youngsters.
You will need:
2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon soda
3-4 teaspoon salt _
1 and 1-2 cups sugar
1-2 cup shortening
1 and 1-4 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs, unbeaten
3 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 cup* coarsely chopped nuts
Before mixing ingredients, start
oven for moderate heat, and line
the bottom of a 13 x 9 x 2-inch
pan with greased waxed paper.
Soften the shortening by cream-
ing. Add the dry ingredients which
have been sifted together, two cups
sifted cake flour, 1 teaspoon soda,
3-4 teaspoon salt, 1 and 1-2 cups
sugar. Be certain to sift the flour
.once before measuring.
Add the unbeaten eggs, melted
chocolate, 1 and 1-4 cups milk, and
beat for one minute. Then add
the nutmeats. Scrape the bowl fre-
quently during the mixing.
Bake in a moderate, pre-heated
oven for 45 minutes
Anyone can grow roses, accord-
ing to A. F. DeWerth, head, De-
partment of Flori-culture. They
may be planted in the fall or
spring. In Texas, fall planting is
generally preferred.
Aim for quality and you may
also get quantity. Many gardeners
try to grow too many varieties
or too many plants. Given careful
attention, Mr. DeWerth says that
10 well chosen varieties will pro-
duce as many flowers and give
far more pleasure than 50 poor-
ly-tended plants.
Essentials for success with roses
are: proper planting, a sunny lo-
cation and well-drained soil. Start
with No. 1 grade plants, and have
the ground ready when the plants
arrive. Make sure roots are never
exposed to sunlight or drying
winds.
Water plants thoroughly. Don’t
apply fertilizer to newly-planted
bushes until the root system is
well established, then feed at least
twice a season. Never fertilize in
late fall. Keep plants free of in-
sects and disease with a regular
spraying or dusting schedule.

paration, pruning and care of roses,

Venereal Diseases
Gradually Being
Controled inTexas
AUSTIN, December 6
We are
gradually reaching a day of en-
lightenment in regard to the con-
trol of venereal diseases, a sub-
ject which, hitherto, was “taboo”
and not discussed in polite circles.
As a result of mass education
and the evolution of treatment of
venereal diseases with modern
wonder drugs, we are now in a
position to plan for eradication
and not merely control of these
infections.
To halt the spread of these “so-
cial” diseases in Texas, the State
Health Department, through its
Venereal Disease Control Division,
aims its activities primarily to-
ward a program of investigation
of contacts of all venereal disease
cases.
Working within the state are
twenty-four highly trained and ex-
perienced interviewer-investiga-
tors, as well as public health nurs-
es, who interview -patients; and,
in turn, all their sexual contacts.
Thus, chains of infection are trac-
ed, and all involved are referred
