Game Of The Year Friday
As Pirates Host 'Hounds
by Charles Sullivan
The Pirates will host the Taft
Greyhounds in the “Game of the
Year,” for both teams.
Forget their season finales with
George West and West Oso, respec-
tively. The loser of this week’s con-
test is eliminated from any playoff
contention.
The teams come into the contest
with identical 3-2 district records
and a battling chance for a playoff
spot — depending upon the winner of
the West Oso-George West title
clash.
The Bears and ’Horns will be play-
ing for the District 30-3A champion-
ship Friday night in George West.
That is one of three unchangeable
facts regarding the playoff picture.
The second fact is that four teams
have already been eliminated from
the race.
Fact number three: At least one
other team will be eliminated Fri-
day night, when the Pirates and
’Hounds renew their longtime
rivalry.
The ’Hounds, 4-3 for the season,
lost only to Refugio, 19-6, in the
hurricane-shortened pre-district
schedule. In district play, they have
been defeated by Aransas Pass, 7-3,
and George West, 7-0, last week.
In the Mathis-Taft series, the
’Hounds have won the last seven
meetings, including a 34-8 decision
last year, and have 12 victories in
the last 14 match-ups.
The Pirates last won in 1978, when
they finished the season 7-3, in a
four-way tie for the district title.
The 1988 Greyhounds have put a
tough defensive team on the field, as
evidenced by the 19 points they
allowed the high-scoring Refugio
Bobcats. They have given up only 52
points in seven games this season,
including only 33 points in five
district contests.
While defense has been their
strong suit, the ’Hound offense have
not been able to ring up that many
points. They have totaled 91 points
for the season, with 73 of those com-
ing against district opposition.
However, that can be misleading.
The ’Hounds have one of the
district’s best running backs in
senior tailback Danny Benford
(135). He is quick and a tough run-
ner, despite his size.
Benford is a breakaway threat any
time he touches the ball and must be
stopped.
Senior quarterback David Gon-
zales (155) is another stellar per-
former and the leader of the Taft of-
fense. He is a very capable passer,
but has not a minumum of running
thus far in the season, preferring to
give the ball to Benford or fullbacks
Nat Rios (165, jr.) or Rene Moreno
(160, soph.), both of whom usually
see action.
Alternating split ends Joseph
Flores (125, sr.) and Ponce Trevino
(140, sr.) are Gonzales’ primary
targets on passing downs, but he will
also go to Benford, swinging out of
the backfield.
The ’Hound offensive line consists
of center Chris Clibum (160, jr.),
guards Marco Garcia (180, soph.)
and Artie Acosta (170, soph.),
tackles Richard Holland (160, jr.)
and Gabe Garcia (185, sr.) and tight
ends John Childers (155, sr.) and
Bubba Roosevelt (175, soph.), who

West Oso-George West
To Settle Title Question
by Charles Sullivan
West Oso and George West set up a
showdown for the District 30-3A title
last weekend, with shutout victories
over their nearest competitors,
Mathis and Taft, respectively. The
Bears and ’Horns will meet Friday
night at George West to decide the
district championship.
In other action, Sinton and Odem
vacated the conference cellar, as
they defeated Aransas Pass and In-
gleside, respectively. The rebuilding
Mustangs, 0-5, remain as the
district’s only winless team.
Taft held undefeated George West
at bay for three quarters, but the
’Horns pushed in a fourth-period
score to take a 7-0 victory. The win
makes the ’Horns a 7-0 for the
season, 5-0 against district opposi-
tion.
At West Oso, the Bears (5-0 and 6-
1) scored 13 points in each half to
hand Mathis their second district
loss, 26-0. A 61-yard Brian Green
punt return in the second period ig-
nited the West Oso offense. Mathis in
now 5-2 for the season and 3-2 is
district play.
Sinton’s Pirates (1-6,1-4) chalked
up their first win of the season last
week, taking a 26-21 win over Aran-
sas Pass in a seesaw battle. Pirate
quarterback Steve Gomez exploded
for touchdown runs of 67, 54 and 41
yards, but it was Willie Medlock’s
one-yard dive with less than a
minute to play that was the dif-
ference. The Panthers are now 3-3-1
and 2-3 in district.
In a battle of winless teams, Odem
scored in each of the last two
quarters to post a 14-0 win over In-
gleside.
Although the winner of Friday’s
West Oso-George West battle will
surely be the district champion, the
loser is not necessarily guaranteed
