'"'WARSAW, Poland (AP) -
Author James Michener, whose
best seller “Poland” sweeps
across 800 years of Polish
history, was awarded that na-
tion’s Golden Badge of the Order
of Merit.
The American writer received
the honor Tuesday before an au-
dience that included Prime
Minister Miecyslaw F.
Rakowski and U.S. Ambassador
John Davis.
Michener, who made eight
trips to Poland in researching
his 1983 novel, drew smiles from
the crowd when he referred to
Pope John Paul II as “a
delightful fellow” from Krakow.
He recalled his adoptive mother
reading him novels of Polish
Nobel Prize winners Henryk
Sienkiewicz and Wladyslaw
Reymont.
Edward Piszek, a close friend
and wealthy Philadelphia
businessman of Polish descent,
announced that Polish royalties
from translations of Michener’s
“Centennial” and “Space” will
be donated to help young Polish
writers.
Piszek also expressed hope
that “Poland” would be publish-
ed in the country that inspired it
and that money earned from
sales also could be used to pro-
mote young writers.
The novel ends with the erup-
tion of an independent labor
movement in 1981.
LONDON (AP) - The
Duchess of York’s successful
battle against her weight pro-
blem drew positive reviews from
the press.
Princess Andrew’s 29-year-old
wife had been chided for having
a dumpy figure just after giving
birth to her daughter, Princess
Beatrice, on Aug. 8.
The former Sarah Ferguson
showed off her new, Trim figure
Tuesday, when she presented
the 1988 awards for business
sponsors at the National Theater
here.
“Gone were the excess pounds
that had unkind jibes circulating
after Princess Bea’s birth in the
summer,” the tabloid Daily Ex-
press commented Wednesday.
“Instead she seemed almost
pencil slim. Friends say she has
been rigorously dieting coupled
with dancing and aerobics.”
“The duchess has lost well
over a stone (14 pounds) and is
now slimmer than she was
before she had baby Beatrice,”
said the tabloid Daily Mirror.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Min-
nesota Twins first baseman Kent
Hrbek was excused from a jury
that will hear a drug trafficking
case after saying his anti-drug
work would make it hard for him
to be impartial or fair.
The slugger, who urges
youngsters to “just say no” to il-
legal drugs in public service an-
nouncements, also told U.S.
District Judge Harry
MacLaughlin on Monday that it
didn’t seem appropriate for him
to sit on a jury hearing criminal
drug allegations.
